The shot through the rails is a Shinto shrine in the park. It has the large bell and a group of homeless people who live under it. A shot of the overgrown bike path, it has been really rainy for the last month. A shot of a stripped and abandoned van next near the junk yard. Last week, the night security guy was beaten and robbed. He was in intensive care for a while with a broken arm, both legs, and a concussion. I am extra careful through there. The rest is just a continuation of the non-theme theme. gotmilk? 11-20-2005, 09:00 AM I took pictures on my commute Friday until my batteries died about three miles from the house. The trades blowing some funk from the mainland? A guy drowns at Hanauma, some poor girl gets pulverized by the surf down by the blowhole, a guy gets beaten into a vegetative state by Ala Moana, a cyclist gets killed by a hit and run(any arrest on that?), and some guy decides to chuck it all on the west shore and just paddle out into the great never never. Anyway, thanks for the photos. Wish I was still there. Did alot of snorkeling, saw my first moray. Surfing is an exercise in futility. Do you do much cycling out in the rural areas? The roads are so narrow, there doesn't seem to be much area to bail out. I saw very few road bikes but alot of beach cruisers are around. You've got to love that red dirt. I think it would provide for some colorful roadrash. I can't imagine crashing into a field full of spiney pinapples. But all goofing around aside, thanks for the photos, please keep 'em coming. Hope you and yours have a good Thanksgiving. bigbill 11-20-2005, 10:58 AM Hey Bigbill, Howzit Brah? Just got back from two weeks there. Man, you've got some bad juju going on there. With the two mountain ranges, you are limited to making loops and doing out and backs. The red dirt really wreaks havoc with the drivetrain. My commuter goes through a chain every 1400-1800 miles even with an in-depth weekly cleaning. I buy them three at a time. About the people, you don't see old Hawaiians. The food, drinking, and sedentary lifestyle really takes a toll on the natives. If Hawaii and France banned smoking, the tobacco companies would go out of business. Factor in that the native Hawaiians are big people to begin with and you get lots of heart disease and diabetes. Lots of big and tall man shops. It is still paradise, just don't dig too deep. Good things are available if you know where to look. Lots of healthy food is everywhere, just don't deep fry it. Glad you enjoyed your visit, I will enjoy my three years here before returning to the Pac NW. wayneanneli 11-21-2005, 04:21 AM Riding here is about using main roads to get somewhere and doing loops back in the boonies. Is it a case of people living the high life too much or are they in the dumps? On the surface, it seems like paradise. But maybe it's too much of a good things, an easy lifestyle. BTW, how much time of your three years do you have left before moving again? What will you next move most likely be? Washington? CA? Most people here reach the point of "an acceptable level of ecstacy" to quote Lyle Lovett, and just live their lives. It is an island of type B personalities. I have two years remaining before I have to move on. I could stay for a total of six years, but that would affect my promotion status and thus my retirement pay. I can retire in August of 2010 and start another career. I was looking at the Anheiser-Busch website last night and there are lots of management type jobs. Budweiser will always be a domestic product and most important of all, I like beer. I am hoping that my next tour will be in the Bremerton, WA area since we enjoy the lifestyle of the Pacific NW. We also have friends up in BC that we like to spend time with. It will be a big shock from Hawaii. The only time that I wear long pants is at work. |
