I'm looking to build up a pair of Campy wheels with some Velocity Deep-V rims, but need some advice in choosing hubs. I'm leaving towards hubs with cartridge bearings (rather than cup-and-cone types) and, thus, am not looking at Campagnolo hubs.
From my causual research, I've come across American Classics, White Industries and DT Swiss hubs, which seem pretty good to me. I'd like to avoid using an altered cassette (such as those made by Wheel's Manufacturing to adapt a Campy cassette to a Shimano freehub)) so I've ruled out Chris King and Phil Wood hubs, much to my dismay.
So, any other suggestions besides those I've listed? If it's of any relevance, the drilling for both front and rear rims is 32 holes.
Thanks,
Sam

I know it's not the question you asked, but your choice of hubs based on bearing type is not supported by experience. There's nothing wrong with cartridge bearings, but there's nothing wrong with Campy's hub designs either. Campy hubs will serve you as well or better than any other choices you might contemplate. Go ahead and pick something else, but don't confuse yourself that you somehow will be getting a better system.

Well said and I agree, for what that is worth!

Just built a pair of Deep V tubulars last month, 32h 3x with DT Comp spokes and Record hubs, they are fantastic wheels. 1000 miles on them now and they are so smooth. I don't think you can beat campy for smoothness or longevity. FWIW, building the Deep V's took two complete episodes of Law and Order; they were a bit of a hassle feeding that nipple in there. Ended up using another spoke threaded through the back of the nipple to guide it in.
But they are pretty and at 43.00 a rim, not a bad deal.

Well... SamDC never said that the cartridge hubs were better in any objective sense, or that there was anything wrong with Campy hubs. In some ways, cup-and-cone hubs might be better, but the reasons he cares about, cartridge bearings might be better.
I personally have been moving toward cartridge bearings because I dislike the time and mess involved with overhauling hubs. I'd rather just pop out a bearing and press in a new one, especially since I ride in the rain a lot. I also like not having to worry about worn cups and cones. (I know you can get replacement cups and cones for Campy hubs, but they're absurdly expensive.)
