Has anyone tried the 2006 Mavic Ksyrium ES wheels? I'm trying to decide between them and the 2006 Campy Eurus wheels. Any insight into these wheels will be much appreciated. I saw the thread that talked about the new campy's but it was only after one ride. 11speed.com sells the campy's real cheap...any sites selling the Mavic's cheap?

Thanks everyone

totalcycling has the Mavic ES for about $865. Still about $300 more than the Eurus.
That's one freaking expensive red spoke.

I rode a set the other day. They are excellent. Better than Mavic SL's. Not quite as good as my tubular wheels.

does the red spoke make them faster?

Really? Besides the red, how did they feel different than Ksyrium SSC SL's?

remember, a lot of things are psychological. if a red spoke makes you go faster, then so be it, buy an ES. The brain is strange yet very powerful

why buy the ES? for very little money you can paint one of your own spokes red. if that makes you a bit faster, paint another one. if you paint all of them red, how fast will you go? could be an interesting experiment. light weight 16 silver spoked carbon tubular wheel versus a 48 spoke tandem wheel, but with red spokes... what would be the net gain in speed per red spoke?

They're much, much more expensive, so they make you feel much, much stupider for having bought such a merely-pretty wheelset. Then when you ride them, this feeling is confirmed, and you feel both stupider and sated, because all your friends are stupid enough to gawk and drool, which is why you bought them anyway.

At least the Eurus come with Campagnolo bearings.

i think the real secret is in the rear hub. Sure the front has a carbon hub shell, but the rear is where the magic happens. The holes drilled into the side of the hub body create a vortex that pull air through and it exits along radial holes where the spokes sit. The rushing air creates lift making the wheel and whole bike lighter. Very simple really. :)

Here's what I've come up without having the luxury of riding either wheelset.

The Mavic Ksyrium ES has a lower rim profile than compared to the Campy Eurus.

ES Front: 22 mm
ES Rear: 25 mm

Eurus Front: 24 mm
Eurus Rear: 28 mm

Logic would dictate that a lower profile wheel should be less susceptible to cross winds, which has been a problem for me while riding my 2002 Mavic Ksyrium SSC SL's.

Having ridden the SL's, I like how easy it is to adjust the bearings. The Mavic quick releases are my favorite. They are easy to use and are always tight. The SL's have been excellent during all race conditions and training. The wheels have only needed to be trued twice. I would assume that the things I like about the SL's would be found in the ES's.

The Eurus appears to be based on the same design as the race proven Campy Bora. That's important to me considering I'm looking for a race specific wheelset. The ES's obviously were used in a number of races by pro teams including the Tour.

Color preference being subjective, I hate red. It's understandable why Mavic used the color on the ES's, (10 year anniversary of the Helium), but the esthetic's of the red spokes, red hubs, and overuse stickers along the rim makes this wheelset look cheap and gaudy. The Eurus on the other hand have the appearance of class and elegance and they look good in the black or silver version.

The advertised weight for the ES is lower than the Eurus... Which we all know means nothing.

My 2 cents,
Abaddon

The ES is merely a ploy to get people who already own K's to buy more, more expensive K's, just like the TdF edition with......wait for it....... a red spoke! According to WeightWeenies the Es weigh 1528.9 grams against 1485 grams claimed, new Eurus not yet been listed.

I put some on a new build two months ago and have ~1,700 miles on them now. I like them a lot - they're light (enough), accelerate well, and seem to be quite stiff - I haven't experienced any brake rub in hard out-of-the-saddle efforts. Yesterday was the first time I had problems handling them in a crosswind, but that was with gusts up to 30 mph! They also look really sharp on my setup - of course that's my opinion, but who else's really matters?

If people think I paid too much for them then that's their problem (actually, it was the a$$h@ole truck driver who hit me that paid too much for them).

As long as someone else is paying too much for something anything goes. :D

Doesn't the new Eurus come with carbon hubs? I somehow remember reading a cyclingnews article about the new model that comes in white and black with the addition of a carbon hub...

i guess my wish for a carbon hub played tricks on my fabricated memory.

WZQ, you're right, but those are the Eurus Carbon Clinchers. They cost a few hundred more.

yeah, and that was 2005-model; they were going for an over-the-top model for someone who wanted more than the standard eurus.

2006 is only 1 version, black or silver, but costs (retail) like $900.

I'm guessing next year or two we'll see a neo-eurus carbon fer ANOTHER $500 on top of that

I really don't want to poop on your bubble, but I can't seem to find them on the campa-site.

According to WeightWeenies the Es weigh 1528.9 grams against 1485 grams claimed, new Eurus not yet been listed. In all fairness, that's (only) a shade under 3% variance. To really scoff at the weight and switch, my slr kit carbonio was nearly 20% overweight. But I do understand your point. When I spend that kind of money, the published "returns on investment" should be there... or somewhat in the realm of acceptablility.
