Squeegy200 12-02-2005, 10:16 AM I always wanted a Chris King headset for my mountain Bike. Not a single bike shop I frequent can recall ever replacing/repairing Chris King products. But the price was a bit too steep for me. I settled on an inexpensive FSA which I purchased from SUpergo. I kept my eye out for a CK sale and after a year, I had to replace that cheapo headset with another. I still kept my eye out but still too expensive. After several replacements, I found that I had spent more money over the course of my riding than if I had just purchased a CK headset in the first place. TACSTS 12-02-2005, 03:42 PM bicycledoctor.net has 'em for $109.90. They usually have all the colors in stock as well. I picked up a navy one there in the summer, it was the cheapest I could find. King's are expensive, but it's worth it to me. merckx56 12-02-2005, 04:06 PM CK forces dealers to sell at a set price. Good luck finding a significantly cheaper price. :( BS! I've never been told to sell a CK product for a set price... So you know, that $114 price is pretty damn good. Cost isn't much less than that... djg714 12-02-2005, 04:07 PM read and learn buddy.... http://www.branfordbike.com/campy/campy.html#Headsets merckx56 12-02-2005, 05:38 PM read and learn buddy.... http://www.branfordbike.com/campy/campy.html#Headsets Don't be a jackass. I can get them and still sell them for what I like, regardless of any BS dealer agreement that I may have signed with King. King has chosen to shoot themselves in the foot on this one. I bought enough CK headsets to last the year. Unless the fine folks at CK send someone to buy them back, I'll sell for what I want... And NO, I won't make anyone a deal... Nessism 12-02-2005, 06:10 PM I've been using King headsets on all my bikes for a number of years now. I considered them a slam dunk product and have never had a good reason to try anything else. In a receint discussion on the Framebuilders list, Darrell Mcculloch of Llewellyn Cycles, a highly respected framebuilders and National class mechanic, commented about how the King top cap cuts into carbon steerer tubes creating a groove. Cut and paste from framebuilders list "> I would challenge that the CK headset is one of the most perfect product > in the bicycling industry. It has defined the market for high-end > headsets, and remained essentially unchallenged for 20 years. I would pick a fault that I suspect is due to patent regs on the threadless headsets.{?} The sliding fit of the top race with just an O ring for taking up the clearance against the steerer is to my mind "Not top shelf, gold coin". It always allows some movement, eventually cutting into Carbon steerers and alloy steerers. The resultant groove then compounds the movement and hammer starts. The reason the thin nylon type washer there is to stop the creak from movements against the stem or spacers. Campagnolo top races have best fitting system INHO. Shame the two cannot be combined. But no argument from me about the CK bearings etc. Brilliant. No better product out there. Cheers Dazza www.llewellynbikes.com After reading this I took apart one of my bikes to inspect the carbon steerer tube. Low and behold, the steerer had a bump where the King top cap contacted the steerer. No problem so far but the the groove is concerning to me. http://search.bikelist.org/getmsg.asp?Filename=framebuilders.10510.0590.eml Juanmoretime 12-03-2005, 02:43 AM Other than ebay... I picked up a King 1&1/8 headset a couple of months ago new on Ebay on a buy it know for $95. It was for my latest bike. I searched around and couldn't find anywhere else even close to that in price. Why not Ebay? dpower 12-04-2005, 07:33 PM About a year or so ago, I bought a silver Chris King 1 1/8" headset. It was going to be for my new c-50 build-up. Right before I received my new frame from Mike Perry (Maestro UK,) I found an ebay deal on the light blue version of the same headset that was being discontinued. Because it matched my Oscar Friere WC paint-scheme (and clearly because my wife must have been out of town at the time,) I bought and installed the blue one and never bothered to return the silver. My whole point for this rambling story is that I have a brand new, unopened 1.125 in. silver Chris King (threadless) headset available. I'll sell it for $115 shipped (only to contiguous 48 states) if you want it. Not sure about the earlier post about possible issues with the carbon steerers. I also owned a 1" (with carbon fork) for a bunch of years/miles as well...no issues for me. IMO, they really are THAT good. oldskoolboarder 12-05-2005, 10:30 AM I picked up a King 1&1/8 headset a couple of months ago new on Ebay on a buy it know for $95. It was for my latest bike. I searched around and couldn't find anywhere else even close to that in price. Why not Ebay? Nothing wrong w/ ebay, just haven't had luck winning bids. My bike is almost ready to build and I don't want to screw around trying to save $5/$10. I'd rather ride... |
