View Full Version : Why 26 won't fit 26?

I have a newer Cinelli B-Groove 26.0 (I think) bar the goes with a Cinelli X/A retro quill stem which is also supposed to be 26.0 clamp. Why don't they fit together? With the stem tightened AMAP, the bar still turns rather freely. What gives? And I realize that the stem is probably a different size than it should be, but what size would that be? Can I get a shim to make it work without buying a new stem?

cinelli used to sized their bar and stems at 26.4, their own standards. don't know if the x/a did come in 26.0 but other quill stem models did come in 26.0. you could try a shim but a coke can won't do, its too thin.I suggest you cough the dough, not worth it if your shim fails.

So what you're telling me is that the Cinelli stem I have will likely ONLY work with an older cinelli bar(or some other 26.4 bar)? I just tried the Coke can shim trick. I had to fold it once and it still doesn't hold it tight enough.

Deleted Nitto shim recommendation - bad advice. Misread OP.

Yep...In late 96-97 Cinelli changed over to 26.0 clamp. Prior to that all Cinelli stems were 26.4.

These handlebar shims might do the trick. They're intended to adapt 25.4mm bars to 26.0mm stems, but they just might work to adapt a 26.0mm bar to a 26.4mm stem:
