What is a better pedal system?

And is Keo better than the regular Look setup? I mean, if you did not have old shoes or pedals, and were starting out, is there any reason to get the older Look system?

The new keo's are lighter, that's about it, imho.

I have never tried the LOOK system, is the new stuff pretty much the same as the old stuff as far as function? I think I would like to try it, could probably pick up some of the older models fairly cheap.

I was lucky to move into the Look system back in 1990 from the old rat-trap/strap system. I firmly believe that LOOK is the way to go. I have tried the newer Shimano SPD-SL and the Time Impacts. The newer KEO pedals are a little smoother to clip into and have a lower stack height than the older style LOOKS.

Top pro's are winning on both systems. I think that it's only a question of personal choice.
Besides, I can't bring myself to vote, 'cause the votes tied @ 50/50!

They're both great and it really just boils down to your own personal preference, be it aesthetics, brand image or price.

I'm riding on SPD-SLs right now, but I wouldn't hesitate in choosing the Look Keo should the opportunity present itself. I wouldn't have a problem using both systems on several different bikes if I could rationalise owning enough shoes and bikes to make it work.

ti spindle keo's and "lance" dura ace.
Looks are easier to get in and out of....lighter...lower stack height...i feel they are all around a better system
ONLY DRAWBACK....cleats are like butter and I seem to break the tips of the cleats off every 1000 miles or so. Cleats cost about $25

How about Campy ProFit? A pedal with low stack height, extreme durability, light weight, same ease of entry as Look/Shimano/Time, relatively cheap replacement cleats, etc. IOW, all of the features that Shimano didn't come up with until the "Lance SPD" pedal. And Shimano's durability isn't proven.

If I had to spend $200+ per year on replacement cleats, I would drop those pedals like a hot rock. I religiously use cleat covers when off the bike, but my Campy cleats last two years (around 20K miles) and only cost $20.

I am not sure what the advantages of the Keo are other than weight, but I've read a number of posts that lead me to belive the Keo are more fragile and less study than the old Looks. I'd rather deal with an extra 60-100 grames than have to worry about my pedals. Plus my shoes and two bikes already use old-Look. Any larger riders care to "weigh in" on the durability of Keo vs old-Look

keos are lighter is because they are smaller that traditional Look pedals. Something else to consider if you like/need a large platform.

My impression, however, is that the Keo still has among the largest platforms.

If SPD-SL durability is unproven, so is Keo. Just like SPD-SL is a different system than old SPD, so is Keo compared to old LOOK.

Overall, the two systems compare favorably - slight weight advantage to Keo, but the walking points on the SPD-SL cleats eliminate the need for covers. Take your pick.
