She's new to the sport, but I want her to have a decent bike. She does yoga, so she's already flexible and so I think she can handle a standard road bike set-up. Our budget is $1,200 or less. It doesn't have to a big-brand bike, it just has to be a good value. Something around a 52 cm would be ideal.

Thanks in advance!

hello,

I would start with having her try out a few bikes, before deciding anything. Just to make sure a specific frame geometry works for her.

thanks

Let her try out a bunch of bikes and LET HER DECIDE. Just help her get the right size. In spite of all of our bickering, etc. the bikes are really all pretty much the same. If she loves it, it will be ridden. - TF

I think this depends on how good of a wrench you are already, or how much grease she wants to start getting into.

A nice new bike at an LBS can be had in this price range, and many will offer a quality fitting, stem swaps, etc, and include some kind of comprehensive first-year maintainence plan with purchase. If you're going to ride a decent bit, but not so much that your life becomes devoted to bikes and you'd rather fix your own everything, a good relationship with an bike shop is a great asset, and worth the extra couple of bucks.

If you are going to get her a road bike, buy her something that she'll be comfortable on. No crit bikes. A basic Roubaix is only $1300, and she can sit up and take her hands off the bars to stretch.

Oh yeah, LET HER DECIDE? No way...my wife picked her mountain bike, because it matched her purple gloves.

In the sizes under 56 there are a number of women specific designs aimed at accomodating the tendency to longer legs and shorter torso... Especially on the classified you should be able to find a good deal...

My wife is over 6' tall with a 38" inseam so the WSD bikes were not an option and so we stuck with looking at the traditional Eurpean geometry...Bianchi etc eventually settled on a Lemond Zurich which she loves (bit pricey though). She also liked the Spec Roubaix (carbon).
