View Full Version : Has anyone compared D/A 7800 and Mavic SSH brakes ?

I recently bought a bike that was coming with the Mavic SSH brakes. Well, I thought before that road brakes are just road brakes and perform more or less all the same. But no, those ones are MUCH better than any Ultegra, D/A 9spd, D/A 8spd, Record 9 and Chorus 10 that I've tried in the past. I have no idea what is better, pad or brake calipers, they just are MUCH stronger. Add to this that they are lighter and cheaper than the competitors, those things are just the best invention in cycling history since triple cranksets.

So my question is, has anyone compared those Mavic brakes with the new 7800 ones ? I don't think this could be possible, but if the 7800 is better, I'll run to the shop to buy them.

And yes, there's a catch: the Mavic brakes are lighter, cheaper and more powerful, but (stupid design) don't have a quick release.

They don't have a QR 'cause Campy Ergos have it built in to the lever...

I had a really old pair of Sachs NS brakes (same as the last gen. of Mavic brakes) and loved them. Stopped just about as well as my DP Shimanos. My little brother is still riding a pair of Dia Comp BRS200s. They work well too.

Here's a question: if you like the brakes, why go buy new ones till these are worn out?

Admittedly DA9 calipers aren't that good but great improvement can be achieved in the pads. Try Koolstop black...dramatically better than Shimano pads and better than Campy stock as well.

I did get the koolstop pads, and I believe they make a difference. They work well, don't cost a lot, and after all koolstop must know what they are doing, they make only brake pads.... But the difference with the stock shimano pads is nowhere near the improvement that I get from switching to the Mavic brakes.
