View Full Version : '80 Raleigh Pro. value?
Ralph007 04-27-2004, 09:40 PM Hi, I am a complete newbie concerning bikes. My mother inherited this bike from her deceased brother and wants to sell it but doesn't know the value. I told her I would try and help. All I know about this type of bike is what I learned on the internet today.
The bike is a Raleigh Professional made in 1980 I think, serial number starts as "WP0......" This bike was in storage for 17 years of it's 25 year life, and is in really good shape, my uncle said he received many compliments on it while riding it Wisconsin last year. Some details; 12 speed i guess? Compagnolo Nuovo Record derailer, Compagnolo brakes, many other parts labeled Compagnolo, Brooks Professional seat, Sakae Ringyo Road Champion handlebars, 3ttt stem, 170 Strada cranks, Verma Rivera toe clips, red sticker on wheels say Super Champion Competition France. There is also an extra sets of wheels (these are 10 speed) with Compagnolo axles and stickers say Fiamme Hard Silver.
I did measure it but I'm not sure about the reference points to use so some of these may not be correct, what I came up with is: top tube 21", seat tube 20.5", head tube 5.5", wheel diameter 24", wheel base 39"
Thanks for any comments, help with value question, or selling advice, and enjoy the pics (if they work)!

bicyclerepairman 04-28-2004, 11:59 AM Where are you located?
theOldMan 04-28-2004, 05:21 PM This is a very nice old bicycle. It has value. A collector may be willing to pay as much as $2000 or even more. The problem you will have is finding someone that is looking for this bike. You can try e-bay. Someone looking for this bike/model will be willing to pay the price.

Don't guess. Count them.

Please spell it correctly:Campagnolo.

Those wheels are 700 tubulars. 24" means nothing.

Ralph007 04-28-2004, 07:19 PM Me and the bike are in west central Illinois, my uncle lived in Madison Wisconsin, where I'm sure he originally purchased this bike new.
Ok, I counted them, six sprockets on rear, 2 on front, so 12 speed. The extra Fiamme wheel has 5 sprockets.
Yes sorry, Campagnolo, I had it correct on my notes, and mispelled it when I typed the post.
700 tubulars, thank you.
possibly $2000 huh, wow! I saw a website with value estimation of $900 plus, depending on condition with similar bikes, but no bike just like it. It sure is pretty, even though it's not my thing (bikes), I can appreciate the engineering. I was certainly surprised by how light it is when I first picked it up.
The bike is dusty in the pics, didn't think of wiping it off before I took them. There are a couple scratches in the paint, top tube from the cable clip/retainers I think, and a few chips on the bottom of the down tube. My mother still has boxes of my uncles stuff to go through so there may be the paper work/manual for this bike also. Maybe an air pump or other stuff also? Probably will try Ebay, I need to come up with a fair reserve price.
Thanks!
treebound 04-29-2004, 07:39 AM A few years ago I sold a late 1970's Raleigh Competition Carlton on Ebay for a little over $200. Mine had SunTour components which were original to the bike model which I learned when someone emailed me a .pdf of the bike owner's manual. There are quite a few active Raleigh collectors that some google.com searching should get you to. Do not sell it until you truely know the details and such about the bike. I would have guessed the tires are clinchers, easy enough to find out by physically checking the bike over.
You might also check around at some local bike shops that carry decent road bikes to see what they can tell you about it. For when you do put it up for sale you will want to have accurate measurements of it in the proper terminology.
Go to some sites like sheldonbrown.com or coloradocyclist.com for how bikes are sized and fitted, then get out the metric tape measure and record what you have. The more accurate and correct your terminology the better the response you'll get.
And quite honestly if I were you I'd keep the bike for myself. If you eventually do get interested in cycling and develope an interest in older quality bicycles you will eventually understand what you have and will most likely eventually regret selling it. I'd be interested in it but I can't afford what would be a fair value on it.
Dave_Stohler 04-30-2004, 06:20 AM It's a nice bike, but it aint worth no $2k. Maybe $500-700.

I've been watching these on ebay for quite a while, as I have the same bike (mine's a 1975 though, but in all original and nearly perfect condition as well). They rarely go for much over $700, although there is NOS 1978 still in the wrapping on ebay right now, and it's at $1625.

Apparently the seller thinks it's worth more than the buyers do, because the reserve was not met.
I watch old Raleigh's and I'd guess that the bike you pictured would get $600 to $800. If it were my size....but I need the big 65 cm frame.
