View Full Version : Toting John Kerry's Serotta
MarkS 04-28-2004, 06:20 AM There is an article in this morning New York Times about the guy who serves as John's Kerry's chief factotum -- or as he calls himself, the Chief of Stuff. The following quotation from the article implies that Kerry travels with his bike:
"Mr. Nicholson's role has evolved. He is no longer the guy who gets the toothpaste. Instead, Mr. Nicholson, who earned $45,000 last year, is the guy who asks the guy to get the toothpaste. Plenty of people are around, now, to help lug Mr. Kerry's Spanish guitar to his room and tote his Serotta racing bicycle."
Does anyone have any idea how often Kerry rides? Is he out there riding every day, all over the country? All of the pictures of Kerry's riding seem to be taken in DC and Boston. I had assumed that he wasn't riding when he was away from home (i.e., one of his multiple homes). Has anyone seen him elsewhere? What does his Secret Service contingent look like -- do they have to ride police issue Treks while Kerry is riding his Serotta. Or do they put a decoy on a Serotta and have the real John Kerry ride something else, like a Huffy?
mrrun2fast 04-28-2004, 08:22 AM Kerry probably has a motorcade following behind him.

Sounds like a manservant to me. $45k for that? I'm jealous. I want a manservant too. :)

MR_GRUMPY 04-28-2004, 10:35 AM If he gets elected, there may be a "Computrainer Room" in the White House.

It'll be the room next to the one containing his hip hop collection.
He just says whatever it takes to get various groups of people to identify with him and hopefully, vote for him. Whether it's talking about his bike, saying that gays are born gay, or that hip hop fascinates him.
Unfortunately, other than owning a bike and talking about it on occasion, I don't have much in common with him. No private plane, SUV, yatch, or multi-million dollar homes.

I'm happy to be of help. Things that seem obvious to me escape others and they need things pointed out for them.

Head on over to non-cycling. You'd get along great with Steam and Bill105.

#1 I talk about my bike
#2 They are.
#3 It does me too (but I hate it)

You probably don't have much in common with GW Bush, either.
Here's a pic of Kerry on his Campy-equipped Serotta in Sacramento:

Here's more on his cycling credentials:

From the sounds of it, Kerry would leave many of you sucking his wheel....:D
SteveD 04-29-2004, 05:57 AM I ride the Pan Mass Challenge charity ride each year and Kerry has done it twice. Each time, including last year, he has ridden without any type of Secret Service. He did not stop at any of the rest stops however. Possibly because of the lack of security? Anyway, he rode 112 miles without stopping and seemed like a pretty good cyclist.
rufus 04-29-2004, 06:58 AM by the looks of it, he rides a steel fork as well.
chbarr 04-30-2004, 11:35 AM Kerry has only been a "serious" contender for the presidency this year. This article explains how the agents are alloted, implying it was just in February. He probably didn't have the security detail because he didn't have one in general.
Based on what I've read (and taking politics out of the equation), his cycling is love of the sport, and not something affected for political gain. Even if it is, he's taken it seriously enough that it's got my respect--I've never gone 112 miles on one ride (my max has been 105), much less without stopping.
Free2Pedal 04-30-2004, 12:05 PM I saw that photo last week, but thought it was someone named Fred. My mistake.
Some of you will find all the Fred's you want if you just look in the mirror.
