View Full Version : Not SD: Your Guilty Pleasures Music?
Coolhand 02-01-2006, 05:18 AM Reveal one or two guilty pleasures on the music front- the classic "one of these things is not like the other". Your 80's flashback fav, disco toe-tapper, or other song you have "no" idea how it got on your iPod (yet has 45 plays listed in iTunes.
I have to fess up- I listened to MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This this morning, and enjoyed it. The shame. Stupidly catchy song- get out of my head already.

against my better judgement I jammed out to Ebn Ozn's AEIOU and Sometimes Y the other day. It doesn't get much more 80s than that. I also like Vanilla Ice's Ice, Ice Baby (in small doses)...
snapdragen 02-01-2006, 07:25 AM I believe it's Truman Capote?
Bocephus Jones II 02-01-2006, 07:28 AM BJ, wtf is your avatar?

Okay, I was trying to figure out if it was wicked witch of the west after a transgender bender.
dr hoo 02-01-2006, 07:34 AM Cross dressing does not appeal to me.
That being said, Brando is pretty darn hot in Guys and Dolls.
snapdragen 02-01-2006, 07:38 AM Too many to list, here's a few
It's Raining Men - The Weather Girls

Video Killed the Radio Star rules, and the video clip rules supreme. It's a classic, just like Falco's Der Kommissar. And everything else by Falco. :)
mohair_chair 02-01-2006, 08:04 AM I do not acknowledge the concept of "guilty pleasures," because I could care less what anyone thinks of the music I listen to. Nevertheless, friends may be shocked to discover that I love to sing along to the soundtrack from the movie "Beauty and the Beast." I also like to sing along to the soundtrack of "Chicago."

Back in my musician days I used to play in top 40 disco bands. It was the "in thing" to profess an enduring disdain for that kind of music. I've kept this squashed down in the depths of my consiousness through music school and life thereafer for well over 2 1/2 decades now.
Here goes...
I like "The Best of My Love" (can't remember the name of the girl group that recorded it).
I also like "Play That Funky Music"
Oh, and a couple of Donna Summer tunes.
:o :o :o

Zufiel Hitzer- great tune by Falco
a couple of mine:
Only in my Dreams-Debbie Gibson. i'm a sucker for catchy pop tunes.so likewise....
Mmm-bop- Hanson
and i kinda don't mind the Spice Girls
also, ever seen that infomercial for the hit songs of the 70's, the one with Barry Williams(Greg Brady)? i've got a weak spot for a lot of that stuff, that. 70's bubblegum, not the disco stuff. mainly cause that's what i grew up on, my pre-teen/early teen years, and it's buried somewhere deep in the subconscious. though i do have to draw the line at Billy Don't Be a Hero.
rufus 02-01-2006, 10:32 AM Play That Funky Music is a classic. hard to believe that was a bunch of white boys.

And your husband still loves you despite this flaw of yours?? Disco... uggghhhh. ;)
I bought a Celine Dion Christmas CD a few years ago, but would not get caught playing thing anymore. Oh, and I love the cd to Notting Hill. Some might say that Notting Hill was a "chick flick", but hey, I'm a romantic.
Cheers, Wayne

From the "mix tape" I made for my wife (she leaves the CD in my car because her car won't play mp3):
Best of Abba
Prince - Purple Rain
George Michael - Faith
Jodeci - Forever My Lady
(This CD also has Best of Etta James, Aretha Franklin - Lady Soul, and actually says "HerName Mix Tape" on it. :D )
Musicals, anything from:
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
The Music Man

george michael is not a guilty pleasure, he is simply a pleasure.
haiku d'etat 02-01-2006, 04:39 PM the eagles, the gangster of love (steve miller), willie nelson, and mucho italian tenors.
otherwise, i'm proud and like that, to listen to alt and 80's punk.
Mapei 02-01-2006, 04:46 PM Tony Newley. Jimmy Webb. Tanya Tucker. And her one-time husband Glen Campbell.

dude, who calls their penis "junk"? not me. i'm perfectly happy with mine!
yarble 02-01-2006, 05:47 PM dude, who calls their penis "junk"? not me. i'm perfectly happy with mine!
junk is a scientific term used to describe the entire between the legs package.
actually package works well also.
paint 02-01-2006, 05:53 PM Gotta go with yarble on this one. Junk isn't just the penis (well, not generally).
My biggest music guilty pleasure is kelly clarkson plus some goofy 80s songs. I have def been on an 80s kick lately.
I just found my British import LP of "It's Alive" by Da Ramones! They rule all. I'm quickly burning it to CD.
Van Morrison's "The Philosopher's Stone"
Elvis Costello's "Get Happy!!"
The last two are the only two albums (remember those?) that I can listen to from beginning to end without fast forwarding.
jptaylorsg 02-01-2006, 10:18 PM "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserables" is a keeper.
I like the live version by Neil Diamond, though. Oooh! Double guilty.
"I Want It That Way," by Backstreet Boys is great pure pop.
My other picks exist on another music guilty pleasure thread from a few months back. Don't feel like digging 'em up.
philippec 02-02-2006, 01:07 AM <deep breath>
Cheesy euro-disco dance music.....
I can't get enough of the stuff! The cheesier, the better!
Maybe because it reminds me of warm summer nights on the dance floor on the Costa Brava w/ my blonde bombshell dutch girlfriend of the time -- Ingrid Slob (her real name!!! -- pronounced Sloob).
Abba anything!
Trio (Da, Da, Da.....)
Vamos a la Playa
Lasciate mi Cantare
-- and, more recently --
O-Zone (I can't help it, they rock!)
and worst of all...
Madonna!
But in my defense, only her latest dancefloor stuff -- I cannot get "I'm hung up on you" out of my head -- best Abba sample ever.
It's really *that* bad -- I'm going to check my self into pop detox this week-end....
</deep breath>
Yep, without a doubt Madonna.
Bocephus Jones II 02-02-2006, 08:25 AM george michael is not a guilty pleasure, he is simply a pleasure.
I'd say the same of Prince. Purple Rain was a killer album.
Bocephus Jones II 02-02-2006, 08:27 AM "I Want It That Way," by Backstreet Boys is great pure pop.
All the neighborhood kids sing that one, but they change the lyrics to "Which Backstreet Boy is Gay?"
Prince is a friggin genius. No shame in that. Now mine....Neil Diamond? Olivia Newton-john (before she got physical). The Bangles (aaaahhh, Susanna Hoffs......)
mohair_chair 02-02-2006, 02:00 PM Prince is a friggin genius. No shame in that. Now mine....Neil Diamond? Olivia Newton-john (before she got physical). The Bangles (aaaahhh, Susanna Hoffs......)
Neil Diamond rules! Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show is such a great song.
Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies....
But there's no guilt in that really.
80's metal:
Winger
Kingdom Clone
Tesla
Cheesy but wicked flash guitar guys...and melody.
I like all old soul. Some holier than thou types just don't get it:
Chi Lites
The Dells
The Dellfonics
And I listen to the "music of your life" type am radio with Muzak, the Capenters, Neil Diomand typ stuff.
As you may know all I REALLY listen to is Thin Lizzy, and here in America it's a guilty pleasure because most people stateside havn't a clue about these lads. Think they're all "The Boys are Back In Town" period. ("get your knickers down")

Dug their twin lead guitar sound--harmonizing with each other.
while mixing something and decided to stick with it. They credit Wishbone Ash too for the twin guitar thing.
I like the early stuff too; a trio doing folk rock ballads and little rockers.

anything from James Brown......cuz sometimes ya need to let ur soul dance!
Speaking of Journey; saw them @ RFK stadium in Philly with John Melloncamp(Cougar at that time, I think), Sammy Hagar, the Tubes, and Bryan Adams. That's quintuple dirty!
