i recently been following a few ebay autions for trek 5900's after emailing one seller with a question about her auction she replied saying someone had broken in to her account and had been listing auctions, she said she had to change all of her ebay account details.
another auction for 3 different sized 5900 for some reason ended early and the seller that had 502 positive feedbacks (2 negatives) had been temporarily suspended. i got an offical looking mail from ebay saying it was ended early due to a systems fault and the seller had relocated to spain and they had verified his contact details. the seller then emailed me (i hadnt even bid on it) offering me the bike for $2600 (claimed it was a new bike)- about half price, including shipping, all i had to do was send him a wire transfer. he sent me a picture of a passport of a derek wishart (may have been stolen). i looked derek wishart up on google only to find he had been doing the same thing with expensive watches and someone had wired him $5000 and not recieved anything (also mention he had an ip address from jamaca). after i asked him to take a picture of himself beside the bike he emailed back and said it was no longer for sale, what a surprise.
beware of anyone claiming to be derek wishart or offering very cheap expensive bikes on ebay.

Sadly I was scammed by Derek Wishart (Ebay Id khuu327) for the 5900 Trek listed by the other roadbikereview member, however I was taken. Watch out for this name. This person is very savy at ripping people off. He sent me copies of his Spainsh passport (or one that was stolen), a phone number in Spain (I talked to this person on the phone), photos and of course a bank account number in Spain. His emails are poorly written grammatically and spelling, yet say all the right things to pull one in. I am devastated and out 2600 dollars. I spent over a week talking on the phone with "Derek Wishart" sending emails and the like to try to avoid this, but in the end, I was to hopeful and too greedy as the bike was at a very low price.
To avoid this happening to you, insist always on some form of money exchange that is protected, there are options but they require research and patience.--Don't trust someone who gives away passport copies freely such as "Derek Wishart" Also ask for the seller to send you multiple pictures of the bike with them included in the pictures to insure they are not just cut and pasted from another persons ebay auction. Most importantly never trust a deal that seems too good to be true.
Finally Ebay is far from being secure and I will never trust it again and I would caution others too. You can still log on to ebay as I'm typing this and look up the ID khuu327 (the one associated with this bike auction) and will see a great record for this seller of over 500 items with all positive feedback. As the message before this one states this is a stolen Ebay identity and is one of the main reasons I fell for this scam.. I checked the Ebayers record and it was superb! but it was stolen? How come Ebay does not know about this? How come you can still log on right now and see a great record for this ID? Will someone else see this ebay ID and the glowing record and fall for the same kind of scam too? Ebay is an organization trying to make a buck with very little concern for stopping rampant fraud on their site. Beware, Be cautious and don't buy virtual bikes.

i think your right ebay isnt doing enough every day there are so obviously fake auctions being put up , but to beat the scammers you have to be as savey as they are, NEVER pay for anything with western union, wire transfer or any other untraceable transfer. escrow and personal pickup is the only safe way to go with expensive things. it seems that the person posing as derek wishart has broken in to that users account and i guess ebay has left it up to that genuine user as to wether he wants to change all his details. the guy posing as derek wishart sent me what i now know to be a spoof ebay email with all the offical looking headers and footers claiming that although the auction had ended they could verify all his details. i recently got another (very convincing looking email) like this from another scammer im stringing along claiming that although selling outside the auction ebay would insure the whole purchase against fraud and give out a refund if it did happen and that ebay reccomended us to use western union, honestly, they would never tell anyone to use western union or any of the other thing the email calimed. that fraudulent seller btw is

my new hobby to these scammers is to string them along, they always want payment by western union or wire transfer and claim to want a quick sale, i just go along with it getting them to send me email after email about payment details, delivery etc, etc. in the absence of being able to give them a good kick in the head wasting their time is the next best thing.
