I'll be in the Denton area in a couple of weeks and I've thought about renting a bike to pass the time. What are some good road routes near Denton? I'll actually be staying in Argyle so routes that are close by would negate the need for a drive.

Check in with the Denton Bicycle Shop. They have a group ride that goes through Argyle if I remember correctly. They should also be able to tell you their other ride routes. I live further south of there, and usually ride around the Texas Motor Speedway service road (5 mile loop), or west on Hwy 114 (32 miles to Boyd and back, 60 miles to Bridgeport and back).

I'll be in town this weekend. How is Hwy 114 for cyclists? How wide is the shoulder and how much traffic is there?

The shoulders on 114 are pretty nice. The is some construction just east of the 144/287 merge. I normally drive to Rhome and park at one of the convenience stores on Hwy 287 and ride from there, The shoulders are mostly 6-8 ft wide. There is one section just east of Boyd where the shoulder is only 3 feet wide because of the highway widens to four lanes there. Most traffic moves to the left-hand lane to pass though. It's only about a mile long IIRC, just to the top of the hill.

It's my favorite ride. There's some nice rollers, and one big (for this area) hill. There's a nice convenience store on the south side of Bridgeport that I usually stop at for a rest before turning around.

If you turn around in Paradise (32 miles round trip from Rhome I believe) there is also a convenience store there.

Good luck!

How was your ride in Argyle? I live in Argyle and I believe it is one of the best places to ride in the D/FW area. There are lots of smoothly paved roads, rolling hills, some challenging climbs and very light traffic. All this assuming you stayed off of Hwy 377 and stuck to the back roads. Didn't see your post in time or otherwise I would have met you for a two-wheel tour of our little town. If you did not get a ride in, you need to next time you visit. Good luck.

there are a TONNNN of AMAZING back roads in Argyle. I live in very north Argyle near Denton and me and my roommate have found many many awesome back roads to ride on. unfortunately i never drive on any of the roads we cycle on so i dont know any street names but if you start out near 407 and 35 W, there are alot of perfect roads just north of that intersection.
