Pretty cool. http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/8584680.htm?1c
Barrett now competes at the USAT under-23 championships in Portugal this month, and at the world college championships in Portugal next month. Wonder if he needs someone to look after his bikes?
Barrett's dad, Bob, is a friend of mine and the assistant pastor at my church. Like most pastors, Bob doesn't make a huge amount of money. He's a long-time marathoner, but the cost of triathlon, particularly the cycling equipment, really threw him when Barrett got heavily into it. After competing for about a year, Barrett sold his old competition bike and used the money (a couple thousand dollars, if I recall right) just to buy wheels for the new one. Bob just shook his head. Fortunately, Barrett's sponsored now, so equipment isn't as big an issue.
Same kid also won the High School Heisman award four years ago as the best overall scholar/athlete in the nation. Part of that means he gets an all-expense-paid trip to the Heisman awards ceremony every year, so he called his sister, a student at OU, on his cell phone this year so she and her friends could find out seven seconds before everyone else at OU (because of the TV delay) that their QB won the Heisman. A truly good guy, and I really hope to see him representing the U.S. in the 2008 Olympics.
