View Full Version : Well, they finally got AJS..."Mental Patient Charged With Threat to Bush"
spyderman 04-08-2006, 01:56 AM I know we joke around a lot, but we should be careful what we say as this could happen to you....
EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - A man threatened President Bush while receiving mental-health care, according to an indictment that raises questions about how to treat such comments by mental patients.
Federal grand jurors indicted Arafat Nijmeh on two felony counts of "knowingly and willfully" threatening to harm Bush - first by telling two workers at his treatment center that he wanted to castrate Bush, then a day later to Secret Service agents notified by the center.
The indictment issued March 23 and made public this week says Nijmeh, a Palestinian, told the agents that his threat "is not too harsh, considering what he has done to my country. If not that, then maybe something else, you know?"
Nijmeh, 26, later said he was joking. He remained in custody Friday pending a bail hearing Monday.
Acting U.S. Attorney Randy Massey and defense lawyer Phil Kavanaugh declined to discuss the case further. Authorities also would not discuss Nijmeh's residency status in the United States or his mental health treatment, citing privacy concerns.
J. Steven Beckett, a University of Illinois law professor, said Nijmeh's statements at the Alton Mental Health Center might be "delirious rantings of a mental patient."
"It's national security gone berserk," Beckett said. He speculated that some details of the case have been kept secret, but added, "My immediate reaction here is, 'Who's nuts?'"
Eric Pingolt, who heads the Secret Service's Springfield office, said generally, the Secret Service takes all threats seriously and weighs factors including the suspect's mental state or placement in a treatment center in deciding the threat's validity and whether to get a prosecutor involved.
"Everything is judged case by case," he said.
The Secret Service also considers the suspect's background. Nijmeh was sentenced to three years in Illinois prison for recklessly discharging a firearm and, in November 2004, got a year of probation for aggravated battery, St. Clair County Circuit Court records show.
A phone call to Nijmeh apartment in Belleville was unanswered Friday afternoon.
You don't have the right to threaten the President, or anyone else for that matter, but threatening the President tends to draw a little more attention.
odeum 04-08-2006, 08:47 AM maybe those we really need to be concerned about are those who would never consider threatening acts up to and including castration for this select person, as though they may not be instituionalized, they are perhaps more delusional than not, some no doubt walking around with the smile of complacency only prescription lifestyle drugs can provide.
problem is, if he did go through with this, er, procedure, bush would be expected to use a big texas-toy item in place of the "real thing" to give it to us instead...

I'm scared or I would have filled in more of the asterisks.
odeum 04-08-2006, 09:58 AM aint sayin' it'd be me, but one might be tempted to say just that for a record ultra chain...

I want to abrogate Bush.

HAHA, AJS is Back....Hey, who has his tinfoil hat, is it svend or ken.....???
HAHA, AJS is Back....Hey, who has his tinfoil hat, is it svend or ken.....???
I'm hurt.
spyderman 04-08-2006, 06:45 PM I just hope you noticed I didn't answer that question...;)
svend 04-08-2006, 07:44 PM HAHA, AJS is Back....Hey, who has his tinfoil hat, is it svend or ken.....???
not even close, my hat is 100% Nivacrom steel. I miss AJS rants......turns out on many things he was far more prescient than many gave him credit for, his wild accusations aside.....
spyderman 04-09-2006, 12:27 AM Yeah, it's kind of a shame he decided to go toe-to-toe with gregg. I think towards the end he submitted like 50 bad post complaints in one night. I certainly wouldn't invite him over for a dinner party, but his rants were certainly harmless. I think he was one of the first onto the PNAC connection. I know he was there long b4 I was.
Then Bush discusses with the Brits painting a plane UN colors, and get Iraq to shoot it down in order to provoke them into a war. Certainly doesn't help all the conspiracy theories surrounding 911.
Live Steam 04-09-2006, 05:57 AM Funny. When I read that article I was thinking of you. :D

Quite frankly, I would never threaten the President. I still have respect for the office.
I think there is an element that is watching what goes on here, and some of our posts while joking, may be misconstrued. Ever notice at the bottom of the screen, there's always two guests lurking.
atpjunkie 04-10-2006, 09:29 AM ranting about W lying and manipulating. funny History proves him more right than wrong. It's the last thing I said to him, that he would be vindicated. The Partisan blinders on some of the right seem far more crazy (in lieu of what we know) than anything AJS ever posted.
read the apologist stuff, the moral relativism,etc... AJS was at least consistent.

But doesn't that beg the question? I see this debate as "what's really a threat?"
If the speaker doesn't have/can't form intent, then it is no threat. If there's no reasonable fear of imminent bodily harm, is every Ralph Kramdenesque "Why I outta..." going to be unlawful?

Honestly, I think you have to treat them all seriously. There's ample enough proof out there that you should. I also believe that people shouldn't make idle threats, period.
JayTee 04-10-2006, 10:48 AM I think I'm unfamiliar with the AJS debacle. Link?

but why waste billions of dollars on more SDI crap when if Iran was to go ICBM the testing process is a tad easy to track. (kinda hard to hide a space shot)
instead of beefing up port security (Dems had money going to such in bill that was killed) which is the more likely delivery method we're gonna spend an equal amount on more SDI crap that will do nothing but fill MIC / GOP donor pockets
Live Steam 04-10-2006, 02:31 PM Ever notice that when you say the sky is falling, it's still there?
spyderman 04-10-2006, 07:27 PM I don't know how you got the "sky is falling" from my post?
What I have noticed is that Bush's authorization of leaks is yet another in a long list of things that shows Bush lacks any credibility.
Every week something damaging about Bush and his administration gets exposed.
Have you decided to look at the sky or is your head still buried in the sand?
Live Steam 04-10-2006, 07:46 PM The sky is falling comes from every post you offer up. You buy into the information and believe it's damaging. However it is nothing more that DNC talking points and MSM blather to attack Bush with. The Sun was shining here in NYC today and will be there tomorrow as well even if the clouds hide it from view.

Forgive my denseness here... but what does one have to do with the other?
Not that I disagree about SDI. Gotta love Ronnie Raygun.
