SONOMA, Calif. (IMMEDIATE RELEASE) - Berkeley's Dave Fuentes raced to victory in the second round of the Infineon Raceway Spring Cycling Series on Thursday in Sonoma.
Fuentes (California Peddler) topped last week’s winner, Ben Standish of Santa Rosa (Dewars Racing Team), and Kentfield’s Joshua Litwack, who claimed second and third, respectively, in the A Race.
Fuentes led the pack from the start and didn’t look back in the 7-lap race around the 12-turn, 2.26-mile road course. It is the same course that is used annually for the raceway’s Indy Racing League weekend.
The four-week series (April 6, 13, 20, 27) incorporates four different courses that are also used for the raceway’s four major motor-sports weekends, creating for great rider diversity. The riders will compete next week on the same quarter-mile drag strip that will be used at the FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 28-30.
“I like the fact that you get to change it up in this series,” said Fuentes, who works as a tennis/fitness coordinator at the Claremont in Berkeley. “I just wish there were more races in the series.”
Fuentes has been racing for 16 years, including three years as a professional, but it is now more of a hobby.
Petaluma’s Peter Nicholson (Eastside Cycles) and Novato’s Kristin Drumm (Proman/Paradigm) each took their second win of the Spring Series in the B race and Women’s Division, respectively. The event attracted 45 cyclists.
The third round of the Spring Cycling Series returns to Infineon Raceway on Thursday, April 20. More than $5,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded throughout the Spring and Summer Series (Aug. 10, 17, 31 and Sept. 7). Gates open at 5 p.m., with registration at 5:15 p.m., and the race starting at 6:15 p.m. Cost is $15 per competitor.
