May be spending a week in Glorieta in late June. Will have afternoons mostly free. Not familiar with the area at all - seems to be about 20 miles from Santa Fe. Worth taking my road bike? Mountain bike? Both?

Thanks.

Take your road bike for sure. That is some beautiful country and hilly to boot. Be prepared to suck some wind for a bit though as it is aroun 6000'. The turquoise trail runs east from santa fe and is beautiful riding. I am sure TerryB or TheBreeze can give you more info for specific rides. TheBreeze is from Santa Fe and will likely be your best source. You might drop a PM there.

Take both. There are several great road rides in the area. Start at 285 and I-25. Go south on 285 to 41. This is a decent road that goes all the way to I-40. Do this as an out and back. There is water in Stanley behind the post office if you need it.

The main drag in Santa Fe is Cerrillos. This becomes 14 (turquoise trail) south of 25. There is a nice shoulder for several miles, but then the road becomes very narrow and dangerous. I don't know anyone who rides because it is so narrow.

Another nice ride is the road to the Santa Fe ski area. 3000ft of climbing in 15 miles.

Glorietta has a trail called the ghost town trail. Granny gear it to the top. The last 1/4 mile is hike-a-bike. Hit the dirt road and go left. Take the road to the forest service tower. Enjoy the view. Now take the glorietta trail back down to the bottom. Go to MTBR.com for a review of this trail. THere is also great mountain biking around Santa Fe.

Enjoy,
JJ

Thanks for the input, guys. It looks like Glorietta is off, because of too many time conflicts and because my company is sending me to Korea and Japan for two weeks, where (according to results of another thread) it's not worth taking my bike, so I'll have to get out the much-detested running shoes. Maybe it's time I learned to rollerblade or something.

Bike mag ran an article in the last issue regarding mtb in Japan.
