View Full Version : My Crazy Project Bike is Done
Flyingsquid 06-28-2006, 08:53 PM So I picked the frame up a year ago for cheap & have just had it sitting around wondering what to do with it. Since I got such a good deal on the frame my original thought was that I would build it into a cool rain, weather & travel bike. Turns out that I caught a bad case of cabin fever over the Winter & decided to have a little fun with it instead. After much trial & error and many, many cans of clear-coat I'm pretty pleased with the result (but I'm a strange guy). Did the bars & the superfluous decaling myself.
So is it a dream or a dud? Bike porn or bike puke? I'm digging it so I guess it doesn't matter, but I admit that I'm curious what the RBR faithful think. I should add that my goal was to have the bike completely Black & White. Past history would indicate that I like to mix crazy colors together, but this one was destined to be monochromatic. Oh yeah... I have swapped out the blue brake pads for the black ones. Figure someone would likely call me on that!
Wookiebiker 06-28-2006, 09:28 PM That's one busy looking bike. Now the question I have to ask is did you use retroreflective material for the decals? That would get you noticed at night.
I kind of like it...
unga89 06-29-2006, 12:33 AM LOVELY
i'd kill for a bike like that...
i would just loose the decals on the rims ,but that's just my personal opinion ! :aureola: bye
zooog 06-29-2006, 01:33 AM enjoy...:)
brianmcg 06-29-2006, 05:13 AM That truly is one of the most origional, and coolest looking bikes I have ever seen. The black and white graphics look really neat. You did a great job on it.
Was black the origional color of the frame?
Flyingsquid 06-29-2006, 06:03 AM I never really cared for the 3 stripes on the seat tube so I decided to come up with a design of my own. The wheelset is as I bought it. The bars are Deda Alanera that I picked up used on eBay. Saddle is a Fizik Aliante that I ordered from FIzik in Black & White. I'm almost thinking that I would have preferred a Black saddle with white scuff guards, but I just wanted something a little more unique than black.
terry b 06-29-2006, 06:48 AM Is it a Look?
:yesnod:
Seriously - I think it's pretty cool. I have a thing for black bikes, white bikes and black and white bikes. You've hit all of them in one. Nice job.
elviento 06-29-2006, 07:15 AM How much do you charge to do a job like that?:-)
Seriously, it does looks very nice. Sure to turn some heads.
So is it a dream or a dud? Bike porn or bike puke?
OneGear 06-29-2006, 07:52 AM there's a whole lot of decals but the paint scheme is very cool. well done
FondriestFan 06-29-2006, 08:31 AM I like it, man. Sweet bike.
james newman 06-29-2006, 09:06 AM one of the coolest looking bikes I have ever seen...great job...
shabbasuraj 06-29-2006, 09:34 AM I'd ride it.
nice work.
atpjunkie 06-29-2006, 12:08 PM New wave way. Get a white ipod and listen to the Cars while you train. Oh and some white shorts and a black jersey.
croswell1 06-29-2006, 12:58 PM Really jumps out at ya!
Do I think it's cool?? You "damn right I think it's cool. :)
Flyingsquid 06-29-2006, 02:40 PM Now the question I have to ask is did you use reflective material for the decals? That would get you noticed at night.
Nice idea actually.... I wish I would have thought of that, but no it's not reflective material. Not a bike that I can see me being caught out at night on anyway though.
omniviper 06-29-2006, 02:51 PM stands out... especially in a sea of multicolored bikes
105slowrider 06-29-2006, 04:21 PM Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so enjoy
Ohm_S.Ohm 06-29-2006, 05:03 PM The last pic is extremely cool - the way the cables form their own design accenting the black and white motif of the rest of the bike. I think you've taken the design to a new level.
You should go pro. In design.
T-shirt 06-29-2006, 06:00 PM Wow, I'm impressed with the thought and work that you've put into your bike.
Black and white in general is one of my faves and yours is really well done. I love the way you painted the seat tube and how it matches the wheels. The bars look great and you've even got white spokes.
This is definatley a winner! You have one of the most thought out bikes I've seen.
Thumbs up,
Tshirt
Derailer 06-29-2006, 06:26 PM Really, really nice. Well done.
Alter Ego 06-29-2006, 06:35 PM I'm gonna be honest here, I belive there are way too many "Look" decals in this bike. In the positive side, I love the way you incorporated the wheel's desing into the frame.
charlie brown 06-29-2006, 09:41 PM Super creative. How did you remove the Look stickers on the seat tube? How many cans of clear cost did you use? You have given me an idea of how I can spend part of next winter.

The decals were surprisingly easy to remove... A blow-dryer and a little patience. It obviously really helped that they weren't under the original clear-coat. I used a little Goo-Gone to get rid of the excess sticker goo & it was free! A previous poster mentioned the glut of Look decals (guilty as charged) but truth be told, I actually removed more Look logo's than I added (which I did free-hand by the way). The frame started out with a total of SEVENTEEN Look decals & logo's. I think I took 6 off & ended up adding 5 to the bars, cranks & head-tube.
I probably ended up using 12-15 cans of clear-coat on the seat-tube, head-tube, cranks & bars (mostly the bars). Be warned... there is a real difference between clear-coat being DRY and clear-coat being HARDENED. I'm guessing that you would want to let the clear-coat harden for a good 60 days anyway. Mine is still not quite as hardened as I would like & I may just end up doing some touch-up work next Winter as well.
cdaringe 08-06-2006, 09:28 PM you could sell it for billions. BILLIONS!
cydswipe 08-07-2006, 09:54 AM You need a color match helmet, like this one! All joking aside, that is a cool bike!
FORT-Cyclist 08-07-2006, 01:20 PM So is it a dream or a dud? Bike porn or bike puke? It's a zebra.
Aztecs1 08-08-2006, 06:19 AM It reminds me of Ed Hochuli

Great reference!

dang, i just went to fiziks site to customize one and it costs freakin 300 dollars. Is this what the aliante with carbon rails cost? I chose to put the fizik logo on the seat i think i looks nice but i couldnt get the aliante logo to change to white.

Who makes the white cables?
scottmilk9 08-09-2006, 07:03 AM Nice looking bike, just don't ride by anyone with epilepsy real fast. LOL
Serious, good looking bike.
Durandal 08-10-2006, 07:26 PM Well, if no one is going to point out the 1/8th :) pound Gorilla in the room.
Why blue brake pads when there are so many black ones?
BTW, otherwise, it's a great looking bike.
