View Full Version : sexist banner ad?
Bocephus Jones II 07-06-2006, 07:44 AM I have nothing against using sex to sell or cracking the odd off-color joke, but isn't this just a gratuitous use of the female form to sell bikes? Nothing pornographic about it, but I think I'd find it insulting if I was a woman. Thoughts?
thinkcooper 07-06-2006, 08:13 AM Is there a light at the end of that tunnel?

LOL! I just noticed where the bikes were going in that ad. :D
MR_GRUMPY 07-06-2006, 08:17 AM Would it sell better if it was a fat old lady?
Bocephus Jones II 07-06-2006, 08:18 AM Would it sell better if it was a fat old lady?
or Ron Jeremy in the same white bikini bottom? :cryin:

I don't really enjoy seeing these types of ads. They don't appeal to me, and frankly it's embarassing to be caught at work by someone surfing the net with one of those banner ads at the top of the screen.
One of the many reasons I switched to Firefox with the Adblock feature is because of the True Match ads that RBR had. I requested that they remove the ad, as it featured a wad of cleavage and a woman with pouty lips with her finger in her mouth. A little over the top and not at all work-safe, if you ask me. They never removed it, as far as I know. I got sick of looking at it, found out about Firefox with Adblock and now I don't have to see ANY ads whatsoever.
That's right, advertisers. Your dollars are wasted on me. I don't even see the crap you're peddling.
thinkcooper 07-06-2006, 08:55 AM Cooper, is that a chipmunk about to inhale or am I seeing things
Yes, it is inhaling. I guess that's the end of a Neo-con chipmunk's political aspirations.
svend 07-06-2006, 08:59 AM It's not a female problem/issue, it's across the board. Sex sells. How many 3/4 naked himbo males are running around 'Desperate Housewives' getting used for their body and not their mind.
The difference being that most guys wish they could be used by a hot couger MILF if only for a sweaty afternoon.....
/just sayin'

I'm confused. You say you have nothing against sex to sell and then say you would if you were a chica. Why would being a woman make you against hot chicas having the peloton ride along their bum???

Huhuhu... BJII said Crack....

I just see it as unimaginative and gratuitous I guess. I really doesn't offend me as such (not much does), but it does seem to be pandering to the Podium Girls "I'd Hit It" crowd...if I want porn I want to see real porn and not some 2 bit PG-13 imitation.

I guess I just like gratuitous, though Teh Von makes a good point about work and all but that is what ad blockers are for......this country is way too uptight when it comes to the human body, another issue in which the Euros are far more evolved
vonteity 07-06-2006, 09:55 AM I could post a billion ads that embellish, usurp and distort the male body.***
Womins need to get a grip, they ain't the only ones getting used by marketing/advertising and media. It's not a female problem/issue, it's across the board. Sex sells. How many 3/4 naked himbo males are running around 'Desperate Housewives' getting used for their body and not their mind.
*** = They're all on Teh J's hard drive.
I have a grip, thank you. I don't care about sexist banner ads because they no longer cross my line of sight. I don't know if you missed my point or replied to the wrong thread, but I wasn't complaining.

Evolved? I dunno if it is defined as using female nudity for selling consumer goods. Acceptance of sexuality in public view is not, per se, evolved. I mean, do you think those Playboy Bunny mudflaps are "evolved?" I more think of our need to be "evolved" when we have an attorney general wanting to cover up Lady Liberty's boobs.
I actually think BoJo's posed a pretty thought provoking question.

il sogno 07-07-2006, 09:48 AM These ads are lost on me too. If it's offensive it is because this company Wrench Science is seemingly unwilling to acknowledge that women ride bicycles too. Oh well, it's their loss.
Maybe I'll sent them some feedback on their website.

You can look now, those True ads got dropped. I complained for the same reason, it was not appropriate for work. I cannot alter anything on the computer system including using firefox. I am a guy and they made me uncomfortable, not track lighting uncomfortable, but enough.
fleck 07-17-2006, 06:56 AM It's amazing what bothers people in this puritan founded nation. Why are people here so shamed by the human figure? We mock those in the Arab world for keeping their women covered yet we're closer to them then most of us would like beleive. Take a look at the banners in any european downtown. Although it creates a great balance with the teenie boppers that wear less the hookers. Ever notice how girls don't dress that way in europe? They celebrate the human form and respect it. We hide it so it becomes a point of rebelion. Aw, to be 16 again...
desmo13 07-17-2006, 07:51 AM One of the many choices to faced in life. Cry foul to the world (sex sells) or just accept it as a non-personal attack on your femininity. What to do?
Why is it wrong to use a natural attraction to bolster interest in a product?
Is it wrong for Coors to use waterfalls? Microsoft to use butterflies? Have you ever considered the marginalization of young butterflies, having to see their bodies exploited for computer operating systems and utilities?
desmo13 07-17-2006, 07:52 AM Oh, by the way.. how do you know it is a female body being "exploited" for marketing.. I have been to Thailand and...

PRUDE
Appropriate for work? Work allows you to surf the web? LOL.
As for me, I loved that ad.

My computer monitor faces the door to my office, can't change it. Don't know who is standing there without turning around. Work is work, as long as everything gets done, I surf.
