Hey there guys,

I have the older Reflex clincher style wheelset. I dented a rim when i tried to do a bunnyhop and failed. :blush2:

Ive been searching for another reflex clincher rim NOS to lace up so that I can use the same spokes, but havent had good luck on ebay.

Using spocalc, it seems that the old reflex and the open pro have the same ERD at 605. Can anyone confirm this?

Open pros are easy to get, and I would like to just lace this up in place of the dented reflex.

thanks for the help

Yes, Open Pro is the newer version of the Reflex clincher.

O4CD = Reflex = Open Pro IIRC they all use the same length spokes.

I'm still riding my Reflex Ceramics. Will till I destroy em somehow!

Did the Reflexes have machined braking surfaces?

Did the Reflexes have machined braking surfaces?

Yes, it was Mavic's second rim with machined brake tracks (the first was the Open SUP). It also had a propensity for developing cracks around the eyelets, so it was removed from the market after only 2 or 3 years and replaced with the Open Pro.

The machined Open SUP was introduced concurrently with the Open 4. Although of similar external dimensions, the Open SUP was heavier than the Open 4. Mavic's explaination at the time was that extra materal had to be added to the sidewalls to guarantee that there were no thin spots after machining.

When the Open Reflex replaced the Open 4, it weighed the same as the Open 4 (but cost substantially more). However, the Open Reflex was prone to cracking on the spoke bed - apparantly because to keep the same weight as the Open 4 but add material to the sidewalls, they had to remove material from the spoke bed.

When the Open Pro was introduced, it was similar in outer dimensions to the Open Reflex, but was heavier. It seemed that they added material to the spoke bed to address the cracking issue. So, in progression from the Open 4 to the Open Pro, Mavic has succeeded in producing a rim of equal strength and durability, but which weighs a bit more and costs substantially more.

That is a great expanation. In support I just had to replace the SUP rims that came on a bike I bought used a couple of years ago. The wheels were originally built in '97. Had to be replaced because the rim cracked on the spoke bed. Btw, replaced both rims with Velocity Aeroheads (OC rear) which am prefering to the Mavics.
