View Full Version : Advice on new wheels.
markmaxwell 07-20-2006, 12:33 PM I'm looking into buying some new Campi compatible wheels. I'm looking at Neuvation R28 SL's with ceramic bearings versus Campagnolo Eurus or Zonda or Fulcrum Racing 1's. There are some amazing deals on the 11speed.com. I don't know if the Fulcrum's are Campi compatible since the web site doesn't say. I currently ride Velomax Ascent II's with out any problems. I weigh around 170 pounds and want something that is reasonably light, yet durable, that I can ride daily.

Well, first, Fulcrum is owned by Campy. Campy started Fulcrum with the idea that it would be easier to get Campy wheels on Shimano equipped bikes iffin' the wheels didn't say Campy. That said, both Campy and Fulcrum wheels come in Campy and Shimano variants.
I don't think you could go wrong with either the Neuvation, Campy, or Fulcrum wheels. The Neuvation is definitely the budget choice, but they do have a solid reputation. If I had to choose, I'd choose Eurus, Racing 1, then R28SL. I think the hubs in the Campy and Fulcrum wheels are better than those in the Neuvations, but that's not to say that the Neuvation hubs are bad.
markmaxwell 07-20-2006, 02:21 PM I'd like to go with the Fulcrum wheels, but the web site does not indicate whether there is a choice between Campi or Shimano. I e-mailed them regarding this but they sent back a reply in Italian that had nothing to do with my question. Should I take a chance and order the Fulcrum's and if they turn out to be Shimano I can order a different cassette body? Or should I play it safe to go with the Eurus?

Well, it's not like you'd be sacrificing anything getting a set Eurus wheels. Between the Racing 1 and Eurus wheelsets, I'd choose the Eurus, but that's prolly 'cuz I dislike the Ksyrium look. And the Racing 1 wheels look a lot like Ksyriums.
I doubt you'd be disappointed by the Eurus wheels. FWIW, why do you want to switch to something from Ascent II wheels?
markmaxwell 07-20-2006, 03:26 PM I'd like another set of wheels because I have two bikes and one set of wheels has become prone to rear spoke breakage. They are a custom set of wheels I had built a while back. Interestingly, while they are nearly as light as the Ascents they've never felt as fast. If I could find a good deal I would probably just get another pair of Ascents or Orions
jlfbogey 07-21-2006, 12:14 PM Nothing wrong with the Eurus wheels, or for that matter the Zondas. I have both, a three year old set of bombproof Eurus and a brand new set of Zondas just came last week and haven't even seen a road mile yet. 11speed.com does indeed have some incredible prices, even considering that you have to ship them from Europe (their price on the 2006 silver Zondas shipped beat my price here in the states by about $100), although I have not personally dealt with 11speed.com myself yet. I anticipate doing so in the future whenever I find a need for an expensive part since their prices, even for Shimano stuff, are so great. If you buy from them let us know, good or bad, what your experience with them is, okay?

Don't get ceramic... save your money.
galanz 07-22-2006, 07:25 AM I e-mailed 11speed a question before I ordered my Eurus and they responded quickly in English, maybe their English translator was on vacation already. If you do want to buy from them, I hope you're not in a hurry as they're closed for the next 4 weeks for summer vacation.

sacbikeguy 07-25-2006, 12:00 PM I have fulcrum 1's in shimano 10 speed cassette body, but they also make a campy cassette body. The cassette body can be changed from one to the other on both the new Campy Eurus and the Fulcrum 1's and 3's. I believe they are around $100 for the stainless steel body and $150 for the aluminum cassette body.
