So I get to the office this morning and my partner has his new sixthirteen in the hall way. Right now he is out of the office doing whatever and the bike is in the next room. I just happen to have my shoes (with cleats that fit his pedals), shorts, helmet ect with me today in the car.
Do I take it for a spin? Theres two things to consider before you answer.
A) He has not ridden it yet.
B) I'm less than a 1/4 mile from the beach.
I'm torn.

I suggest you take it for a spin on the beach and don't forget to ride it down the stairs on your way out of the office. That'll show him for leaving it unlocked with the stickers still on it.

At least get some tools and level the saddle!!!
As far as riding it, you know the "right" answer. You also know the fun one.

If somebody got on my baby and rode it before I did....I'd be steamed....but I'd also laugh, because it would be a funny, insiders joke on me. Very few people would even understand why it should even bother anyone that you might ride it FIRST. I'm not suprised you're torn.

I did take the reflectors off for him. I am about to level the saddle. Ride or no ride I cant stop tinkering with it.

It's bad juju to steal the maiden voyage. I would, however, remove and hide the saddle to teach him a lesson after taunting you by leaving that machine in the office.

Well as long as your tinkering, why don't you pop out for some clothes pins and baseball cards.

Depends on what you mean by "partner." If you mean like he's the pitcher and your the catcher he probably won't mind at all.

Its bad to ride it at all w/o asking, regardless of it being first ride or not.

I'd be tweaked if I was the owner.

I'm sure it's a helluva bike, but do they really need to plaster it with those huge, gaudy, white stickers?

'Dang it boy, you might as well get your ass kicked if you take it out riding. That's like taking someones new $4000 propane grill and cooking on it before they have a chance to'

That sounds hilarious unless he becomes distracted by it and wrecks. I looked all around once to find where a sound originated and wound up crashing into some traffic cones, flipped, took out other cyclists, etc. Not fun.

I hate the way bike cos. Now-a-days seem to think it's a bad idea to leave an inch of frame uncovered by decals.

I was in shop thr other day and counted the stickers on one bike ( may have been a Scott), gave up at 16.

Nuts.

I think you should hide it, work some of your PS magic on that PIC and email him a ransom note from some new hotmail account.

Y'know what really gets my panties in a bind? When they put their name on the front of the fork and/or the back of the seat stays. That's just pathetic. If you need your brand recognition coming and going, you're just desperate.

I rode 60 miles behind a guy on a Moots. Sixty-freakin' miles staring at "MOOTS MOOTS"

I started thinking I was in an old Lil' Abner episode.

You should NOT ride it. You know that, everyone knows that.

What you should do is a complete safety check. And you can only do that by weighting the bike, turning the pedals, and shifting through the gears. It might LOOK like you are riding it, but you are just making sure it is safe and tuned for HIM to do the first ride.

If you did that to me, you would not be able to ride for the next month.

All joking aside, please respect your budy. If you want a ride, ask first.

Since I was a kid I've been funny about anyone riding my bikes. It pissed me off to no end when my cousins would take over my bike. Don't go there.
So you want to ruin his 1st ride on his dream machine? What kind of partner or friend are are you? How many ways can I say you are a *ickhead for thinking about it.

Not much grey area in that.

I'd go along with KenB's idea. PhotoShop the picture from this thread :http://forums.roadbikereview.com/showthread.php?t=63426(I hope that guy got a new one), then make some lame excuse that you couldn't resist taking it out for a ride and you had a small "accident", then show him the picture. Tell your buddy that the bike is at a friends house where he is fixing it up with duct tape and J.B. Weld, it will be as good as new! :D

SuperB

Don't ride it! He'll know you took it out, there will be some dirt or sand or scratch or something. He'll probably let you ride after he breaks it in anyway.

Several of us kept offering, & the guy on the creaky 30-year-old Masi who was pulling two riders ahead of me & Mr. Moots insisted he was doing fine. Which he was; a freakin' ox!

Oh, and the only reason I know it was a Masi is because I pulled up next to him at a pit stop. Now that bike was built back in the day when manufacturers had some dignity & didn't have to spray their name all over every inch of frame.

I was just giving you grief. On my century yesterday, for the first 60 miles there were about 3 guys doing all the work. Any time someone would try and take a pull these guys would think that we were attacking, so after a while we just let them burn out up front.

I agree that brand name labeling on frames is a little out of hand.

But I think that comparatively speaking, Moots is pretty understated.

Go buy some "decorations"

- Sumo wrestler bike bell
- Streamers for the handlebars
- Clothespin with a card in the spokes (you'll probably need a Minoura clamp to hold the clothespin on the fork - it'll look high tech)
- Buy a cheap cycle computer and set the wheel size for some weird measurement (but don't set it so far out of range to not be believable)
- Flipping the stem -- that's a good one!
- Find a neon green dork disk to put behind the cassette

And possibly screw up a careful fitting from the bike shop. Great idea.
