I just found a nice '84 Trek 620 frameset. It has canti bosses. I'd like to put 700c wheels on it. Anybody know if there are any canti or v brakes that are adjustable enough to make this work?
From what I can tell this frameset has never been built up so I'm starting from scratch rather than discarding old 27" wheels. I hate to start by getting new(ish) 27" wheels. Plus I want to put somewhat larger tires on it if possible.
Had one of these 25 years ago when I was in school but it was stolen. I'm excited to get another on the road.
Thanks

I can't say for certain as I haven't tried a combo like that. So what I would do if you have a set of road canti's or V's and a 700C wheel set, test fit and have a real good close look to see where everything lines up. If it won't work, you be able to tell right away.

I did and with great sucess. It is a great ride. Look under touring bikes on the commute touring forum and I think maybe two are pictured. Mine is the orange and yellow.

Great news.
What brakes did you use? Also how large a tire do you think will fit if I run the 700c wheels?
I'm looking to maximize the ride on this old 531 frame so the bigger the tire the better. Unfortunately I don't have extra parts so experimenting with new or even used parts could get expensive if they don't work.
Spicy powdercoat job by the way.

The difference between 27" (630mm) and 700c (622mm) is just 8mm. Divide that by 2 for radius and you get just 4mm. Most brake sets can handle that kind of difference. I've done it before with sidepull and centerpull brakes. It should work with cantis also, unless the posts were brazed on at one of the extreme locations.

If cost is a problem, find a shop that sells used stuff or check ebay for used cantis.

Pauls (http://www.paulcomp.com/)makes some cantis that have an extreme range of adjustment, but they are very expensive. Look for the Moto Lites. The

Has anyone out there done a similar conversion using V-Brakes and standard road levers? If so, how did that work out? I just got a set of 287-Vs for a similar setup.

The closest and strangest thing I have done to that is 9 years ago I took an '93 CCM "Blitz" frame that a freind gave me and turned it into a very weighty training/beater off road bike (I wanted the weight for strengh training, and I wanted a low buck bike I could completly trash with out worrying about destroying it's value - it worked very well  ).

Anyways, one of the things that I did was I replaced the crummy stock stamped steal canti's with a set of Deore "Servo-Wave action" DH grade V's another freind gave me (along with the matching brake levers)...

I know that's not the same conversion, but it's the closest thing I have done to that.

What my take on that converson is that if the frame has the bosses, it should be fine to convert. Else your going to need to have the bosses added, and that could get tricky to do in your workshop (because alignment and spaceing are critical), or very expensive to have done by someone who can add them.

Oh wait, you want to use standard brake leavers with V-brakes...My bad. I haven't done that personaly, which may be suprising given some of the things I have done. But I do know the leverage ratios are differant, so modulation and feel would go right out the window...
