:mad2: !!!!!!!!!!!
ok, so this is what's up. i have ultegra 10 shifters. about a month ago my shifter started to "stick." when i pushed the lever to upshift the derailleur didn't respond. i asked another racer from my team about it and he said chances were something got in the housing or that i got some gatorade or something that had gotten up in the housing or something that would cause the cable to stick. i changed out my cable and housing and when i got the new housing i put on a Dura-Ace gear display. well, the cable and housing change did nothing but upon futhur inspection, i watched the gear display when i would push the button and my cable didn't move when i would push the lever to upshift. so the shifter mechanism in my shifter isn't responding. does anyone have this problem or know what to do to fix it? i sometimes have to push the lever 3 or 4 times to upshift. typically, it only happens in my big chain ring on clogs 7 8 9 10... just my highest 3 or 4 gears usually. thanks

Assuming that you have checked to be sure that the BB cable guide is clean and in good shape, and that the lever hoods aren't interfering with anything, then about your only option is to flush the mechanism with solvent (WD-40 or TriFlow) while shifting through the gears. If that doesn't cure you, then you need new shifters. "No user serviceable parts inside."

you wanna do me a favor and elaborate on those? this is the first time i have ever really had to do any work with my shifters... i don't believe my hoods are interfering but i don't even really know what the BB cable guide is (sounds like the end barrel of the cable though, am i right?) thanks man!

The cable guide is located on the bottom of the bottom bracket. To check to see if the cable moves freely in that area, just grab it by hand along the downtube and see if you can move the derailleur when you pull on the cable. Frequently built up gunk on the guides is the culprit.

yeah... my bad... haha, i knew what that was, BB just didn't click (should have..) and yeah. anyway, it's not the cable guide, so, how could the hoods be interfering? to me that sounds like the biggest possibility because when i push the button, nothing happens in the shifter because the cable doesn't move... thanks guys

how could the hoods be interfering?

Just look at the mechanism. There are places where parts of the hood can/do contact the levers, cable housing, etc. and therefore where a flap of rubber from the hood could get into the mechanism or prevent something from moving. The first step in fixing any mechanical problem is to look carefully at all aspects of the mechanism and gain at least a cursory understanding of what is going on.

Have you considered taking it to a good mechanic?

i tend to do it myself if i can, ask for help if i can't and then try, and take it to a machanic as a last resourt. i didn't have any problems in my crit tonight, but i was running a different wheel so i dunno. i'm not finished playing around yet... i do possibly see a machanic in the future though...

You said you had no problems with a different wheel. Was the wheel you were using Shimano compatible? Are you using 8 spd shifters with a 9 or 10 spd rear cluster, or vice versa?
