View Full Version : We'd have won with Jan - Kloden
madvax 07-23-2006, 03:27 PM Kloden ran a good race. Too bad he didn't believe more in himself.
Quite a striking difference between Landis and Kloden. Landis never gave up believing he could win, where Kloden still seems focused on Ullrich.

We'd have won with Jan - Kloden
Andreas Kloden says his T-Mobile team were wrong to suspend Jan Ullrich over doping allegations, claiming they would have won the Tour de France with him.
Ullrich, who along with team-mate Oscar Sevilla has subsequently been sacked, was withdrawn on the eve of the race.
"We fought till the end for Jan, so he can be proud of us," said Kloden, who finished third behind Floyd Landis.
"With Jan here, we would have won the Tour this year. Jan was innocent. I know him. He's a good friend of mine."
Despite the absence of their team leader, who won the Tour in 1997, T-Mobile claimed three stage wins.
Matthias Kessler was victorious on stage three while Serhiy Honchar won both time-trials.
Kloden, who finished a runner-up to Lance Armstrong in 2004, finished second to Honchar in the penultimate stage time-trial on Saturday to finish third overall.

While I think he could have waited until Floyd got down from the podium before saying something like this, it's tough to fault a guy for standing up for his friend. The loser move would have been to say something along the lines of "Jan's doping torpedoed us, and we never really recovered."
Spunout 07-23-2006, 03:36 PM What a load of ****. T-Mob should toss Kloden for being a dork.

Maybe not Kloden, but it appears team manager Olaf Ludwig and Sport Director Mario Kummer may be getting the ax next.
They are such a strong team, but their racing tactics often seem questionable.

A revolution within T-Mobile?
The firings may not be over at Team T-Mobile: it looks like team manager Olaf Ludwig and Sport Director Mario Kummer could be the next, according to L'Equipe. Kummer is to be replaced by former rider Rolf Aldag, the paper says, but it fails to explain who would buy the team and Pro Tour license from Ludwig and his Olaf Ludwig Cycling GmbH. Bob Stapleton, directeur sportif of the T-Mobile women's team, is allegedly set to become either Ludwig's assistant or his replacement.
Christian Frommert, T-Mobile spokesman, said that "we are discussing everything. The discussions will take place after the Tour team's reception in Bonn," on Monday. He added that, "Aldag has been working as an advisor for us since he stopped riding."
According to L'Equipe, the proposed changes have nothing to do with Operacion Puerto, but are part of a general team reform. "We will be looking at everything," said Frommert.
He elaborated on this to www.spiegel.de, although these comments seem to play down the removal of Ludwig. "Stapleton has been with the team a couple of months, at the Tour, too, and Rolf Aldag has been advising us this year. After our return from France we want to talk about how the two can play a more intensive role. But we've been planning that a long time. It has nothing to do with throwing out or buying out Olaf Ludwig."
The team has "a lot to talk about", he added. "We will all sit down together: management, sport directors, and riders. Then we will talk about everything: how to prevent another Jan Ullrich case, and how to be prepared for something like that, with new rules of conduct and internal changes."
And CSC would of won with Ivan Basso.

...I think if basso would have raced, he would have won this race in much the same fashion as he won the giro. It woulda been armstrong-like, more of the same of the armstrong era, gradually pulling away and over by the first stage in the alps.
the race we got was much more exciting.
Sasquatch 07-23-2006, 06:14 PM yeah, can;t wait to get the DVDs. We didn't get it on TV or cable over here :(
32and3cross 07-23-2006, 06:17 PM Its pointless to discuss who would have won had they been there. Ullrich and basso were not in the race therefore there is no way they could have won. Landis won - full stop. Thats the way it is.
And really I don't think it was a forgone conclusion that Basso or Ullrich would have won outright Floyd seem perfectly able to layout the smack down when he needed to.
As it was it was a great race and the victory goes in the book with no asteriks next too it.

Loser move?
Ullrich and Rudy Pevenage, and to a lesser extent Sevilla, DID in fact torpedo t-mobile's chances.
jan was an idiot thinking he could get away with it, and deserves everything he gets.

You missed some other quotes:
CSC: "If Basso wasn't busted, we would have won"
Tyler Hamilton: "If me, or my twin were in a race, one of us would have won, I swear on my dog's grave"
Discovery: "If Lance didn't retire, we would have won"
Vino: "If I was in the race, I would have won"
Pereiro: "If Landis bonked two days in a row, I would have won"
Evans: "If Landis, Pereiro and Kloden crashed and got out of the tour, I would have won"
Eddy Merckx: "If I was 30 years younger I would have won"
LeMond: "blah-blah-blah, sob-sob, I would have won"
Axel Merckx: "If I was my father I would have won"
Leipheimer: "If I didn't lose time in time trial and a few mountain stages, I would have won"
Gonchar: "If I could climb, I would have won"
Sastre: "If I could time trial like Honchar I would have won"
Dessel: "If I could time trial like Honchar and climb like Sastre, I would have won"
Hushovd: "If I won all stages from 1 through 20, I would have won for sure".
Miles E 07-24-2006, 12:02 PM Kloden ran a good race. Too bad he didn't believe more in himself.
Too bad for him his team didn't either. If they'd acted like the dominant team and put some of their firepower to work reeling in the two significant breakaways (Pereiro's on stage 13 and Landis on stage 17) they would have finally captured that elusive top spot on the podium.
The whole tour played out like a breakaway full riders more worried about doing too much work and in turn giving someone else an advantage than giving it everything they had to put themselves in a position to win.
Mdeth1313 07-24-2006, 12:59 PM I cannot stand t-mobile. I used to like Jan Ullrich, until he started cheating. If Jan was there they would have won-- probably not, my money would have been on Basso. If those 2 were there, I dont think it would have been as exciting as it was.
All I've seen from t-mobile these past 8 years is whining, in-fighting, confusion, lack of focus and excuses (oh yeah, whether everyone dopes or not- I'm not going there, they were stupid enough to get caught). Their race tactics suck, Jan, while a talent, reminds me of Eric Dickerson from football- super talent, work ethic/eating habits- nah.
When Landis cracked, the only thing I wanted was for T-mobile to NOT win-- anyone but them-- Kloden's quote shows you why.

Of course that's true, in the grand scheme, but in my view Kloden did very little wrong here standing up for his friend.
The loser mover on his part was never acting like a team leader and then bemoaning the fact that his team lost its leader. He shoulda had some balls.
Nothing eveil about this particular quote, though. That's all I'm saying.
I cannot stand t-mobile. I used to like Jan Ullrich, until he started cheating.
That hasn't been proven yet. Incidentally, some riders in this years TDF were no doubt doping and may or may not get away with it.
hornet22 07-24-2006, 03:09 PM If the UCI or anybody else was serious about doping they would ban those who are caught for life....this is the only solution.

Yeah, I know-- but if you read the evidence out there so far coupled w/ his refusal to take a dna test, he's pretty much screwed. besides, I got sick of everyone else telling me there's no doubt armstrong was doping every moment of his 7 yr run.
besides, if Ullrich was dumb enough to get caught taking ecstacy, why not blood doping?
