Apparently Danica Patrick was so impressed with John Lelangue's constant guidance of Landis in the ITT that she's hired him to ride behind her at NASCAR events: Lelangue's job will go something like this: OK Danica, left turn, doing great, left turn, come on Danica, left turn. Super. left turn. come on. left turn. that's it. left turn. OK left turn...

Quite honestly, if I were in a time trial where I had to beat the guy behind me by more than 30 seconds to win the Tour de France, I would want somebody telling me where to turn, and I definitely would have ridden or driven the course before actually racing it, just like Landis did. A straight up out and back time trial is fine, but going that hard and having to think about which way to turn could be a disaster. Sometimes on training rides I get so spent I just have to start day dreaming to make it home. When I used to time trial, the pain was insane and the day dreaming/mind games started a lot earlier. Look at what happened to Julich in the first time trial.
And by the way, Danica decided to stay with Indy car.
