How many of you are going? I've gotten away from organized rides but I really want to go to HHH for the 25th anniversary. I rode seven of them with my last being 2002. Only thing that might keep me home this year is cost of gas ($75 round trip).

I'm going. I first rode in the HNH in 1989 and couldn't miss the "Silver Anniversary"one.

Not me. Last year was my first year to do it, and I really didn't care for riding with 10,000 people. (Ugh, and I didn't know the deal about the pickle juice and slugged a cup of it back thinking it was sports drink - that just about killed me!)

'82 and '83 were enough for me... 102 degrees at 10AM, thank you very much. :)

I rode in an organized race, once, in the 80's. The race was the "Chilly Hilly". I was thinking of heading over to ride the HNH but am very confused on which race to enter. Since I am not a team racer and have no affiliations should I go with the cat 5 or the age appropriate 100k? Suggestions? (10,000 riders? hmmm...what is the parking like?) Stamp

Stamp, never raced there but you can get all the info at their website www.hh100.org/ . Almost all of the participants are not racers and are entered in "the ride". As far as parking...easy. HHH is known for being one of the best organized rides in the USA.

I've been on a couple of relatively cool years. This year it looks like it's going to be an inferno.

Stamp, if you are not licensed, your day license will only cover Cat 5 and the field is limited, so enter early. They have closed registration the last couple years of racing. If you are old enough to race masters and have a license I'd recommend that, as the field is usually safer, but then there was that large wreck in last years combined field for Master 45 and 55 combined. Parking is no problem. if you're at a local motel, just ride to the start line.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like a lot of fun, Think I might take just my training bike though, 10,000 riders? Any info on the speeds/times of the winners? Don't mind a stroll, would hate to be totally outclassed though.

Cats 1,2,3, and 4 all race 100 miles. The fields are limited to 175 riders. The finish times are very fast, even the 4's should scare the 4 hour mark if not beat it. IIRC, the 1,2's will finish around 3:30,maybe a little less I could be off though.

Cat 5 is limited to 100 riders.

All other categories including women race 100K (except Juniors under 14). All Master's feld limit is 175 riders. Last year they combined the field of M45 and M55 and didn't even differentiate by number sequence. It was the pits, you didn't know who you were racing against. This year they have included a M65, so I suspect that the 55 and 65 fields will be combined, I hope they differentiate by number or color.

What is the course liike? Flat, hills, rolling hills? One would guess pretty flat being up there in the plains so to speak. Damn 25 to 28 mph is really fast for 100 miles, guess I will just make sure I stay out of the way;-).

The course is basically flat, real flat. There are some false flats, and in the 100 M there is a rather long one. The wind is in your face almost every year between about mile 75/80 and about mile 90, very discouraging at times. Did I say the course was flat? 3 years ago, when there was no race, there was a large peloton of about 100 riders that managed to scare the 4 hr mark. I'd say about 75 did go under 4 hours, and those were citizens or racers with no race to go to. I seem to recollect that the 1,2's actually get in in about 3:20, very fast. If you race, you must be very alert, there are some sketchy riders, even in the Masters categories. Pay attention the first 10 miles or so, and you'll be able to pick them out, unless of course, you're one of them ( just kidding). Last year, one of the sketchy ones was very obvious, he wore a sleeevles jersey ( that's a violation of USCF rules, but no one noticed as we lined up before real daylight) and anyone who races should know this. Sure enough, he was instrumental in a major crash about 15 miles into the race. It wasn't all his fault, but he definitely contributed, and about 20 or more riders were eliminated.

Anybody have a hotel room to give up? I need something for Friday and Saturday nights.

Sheppard Air Force Base still has rooms if you are affiliated with the military. I reserved the best $39 room that could be found for $88 back in May. It was one of the last rooms left that were under $300 a night.

Thanks. Not military. Have called everywhere; there's nothing.

CJ call Marie Libbly 940 723-2741.in Wichita Falls. She works for the Chamber of Commerce I think. Anyway call her, tell her how many beds your needing and she will give you names and phone numbers of good people in the local area that are willing to host (as in free) riders for the weekend. I just found a place for two, for a friend of mine and I to stay at. Here is the link to where I found this: http://cycling.beloblog.com/, check under the header "Cheap housing in Hell". I would have posted it earlier except I couldn't find the link. I was partially correct in where she worked, at least I got her name and phone # correct. Good luck.

I have friends staying at the local YMCA for $15 a night. Bring a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor, bring earplugs. If my family was not coming that's where i would be.

Guy I'm riding with got a room yesterday. Don't remember the hotel name, but it's the one right next to the MPEC I think. It was being remodeled and just opened up. He said there were about 100 rooms available as of 2 days ago. He got the number through the chamber of commerce.

The Crescent Plaza is what I was informed. 940-767-9700, give 'em a try. No answer right now. but I'm informed the hotel is just now opening. He got the number from the Chamber of Commerce, so give them a shout if the number doesn't work.

I spent a sleepless night at the Y a couple of years ago and will never do that again. The room was dark and cool which would have made for a good night's sleep under normal circumstances but with about 30 other snoring and farting riders even earlpugs were no help.

I'm going for the first time this year. My riding buddies have been before. They said we just need to bring a tent and can camp out. I'll let you know how that goes next week.

Ooof, good luck with camping out. It's hot and I'm too old to sweat like that anymore. Plus I've had trouble sleeping in situations like that. People just don't know how to shut up after dark.
