View Full Version : Downers Grove on Sunday
Kristin 08-14-2006, 08:55 AM For me its an excuse to waist film. What's your excuse?
It could be fun to meet some people from here. I was thinking perhaps food and drink? Interested? If so, I'll set it up.
3 choices of food (all on the course):
Bambaleo's (Mexican - Margaritas baby!)
Giordano's
Ballyboyles Irish Pub (a pint perhaps)
2 choices of time:
Pre-Race (say 1pm)
Post-Race (say 6pm) Give 'em time to start late.
MR_GRUMPY 08-14-2006, 09:54 AM I'll probably be there for the "all important" 11:30 race. (the 1-2 national championship crit)
I may stay for the "Pro" race, but I'll be long gone by 6:00.
I'm going to try to make it there for the 1-2 women's race at 10:00 (also a national championship), to cheer on an ex-team member (who made it to the "big time")
velodev 08-14-2006, 11:01 AM I'll be down there. Probably most of the day... I'd love to stop by and introduce myself.
4bykn 08-14-2006, 05:46 PM What's your excuse?
I'd love to be there, but alas I can't be there. Gotta go visit my bro'-in-law to help celebrate his final birthday (seriously).
Some friends are going up though. Wish I could be there. Have fun.

.
Who uses film anymore? I filled 3gb worth of memory cards last weekend at Elk Grove!
I wish I could make it, unfortunately I have to drive the wife and our pup to a dog show in Indiana this weekend :(
CoffeeBean2 08-15-2006, 09:37 AM I'll be there on Saturday for the 30+, 40+ Cat 4/5 race, maybe do the Cat 4 race as well. On Sunday, the wife and I are going sailing with our neighbors. If that falls through, we'll be coming back out to DG.

I just had to make the gut-wrenching decision to fix my ElanII when the shudder door broke. But I'd rather buy a kayak right now than a new camera, and I still have a bunch of film in the freezer anyway. What are you shooting with? For me I couldn't spend less than $2000 on a digi body and still get the quality my Elan produces. There is nothing wrong with film in the end. Just a little less convenient. It is by no means more expensive than replacing gear.

I loved racing that course. It's a very lively course, compared to ther places they race in Chicagoland. I love sitting on Suicide Hill watching the pro riders go by on Sunday afternoon.

I wasn't sure about the benefits of a DSLR at first (especially the image quality), however when I realized the Canon Digital Rebel XT was less than $900 (body only) and I could use all of my Canon and Canon compatible lenses, I figured it would be worth a try. I've been more than impressed. I think Canon might be coming out with a newer version of the XT this fall, so you might be able to pick the current version up for a good price when that happens.
I recently had three 11x14in prints made (up to that point most of my digital stuff has just been online and on the monitor) and I think the results are better than any film print I've made in that size, and almost as good (but not quite) as some of the prints I've had made from medium format transparancies.
I still have several Canon film bodies though, just can't bring myself to get rid of them.

With regard to image size & film cameras, the film you choose matters more than camera body...though the number of focal points and speed of your lenses and mainboard have some impact on sharpness as well. A slow film with a tight grain can be enlarged up to mural sized images if you'd like--depending on how you aquire the image.
In digital SLR's what used to be measured by film grain & speed is translated in to pixel size. The rebelXT DSLR would be a step down from what I am doing now with film and my old Dimage ICE scanner. But I like to produce gallery quality artwork rarely print anything smaller than 11x14. I'm planning to purchased a used pro level digi in a few of years.
Mr_Snips2 08-16-2006, 07:47 PM Wow...sorry guys, i wont be there. I'm doing a century with my dad on sunday. And i don't want to race before it. Goodluck guys & gals

Kristin 08-18-2006, 06:17 AM If you are not Stan, its okay. You're still invited.
Sunday 1pm at Ballydoyles. They are on the west side of main street.
http://www.ballydoylepub.com/
Lets not do lunch...at least not an organized one. They have more than 20 selections of beer--mostly Irish--surprise. So an appetizer and a bottle or two should do it.
I am not sure now if I will be able to make it. I completely forgot that our church picnic was this weekend and I made a commitment there. I might be able to sneak away, but its way out in Sugar Grove, so maybe not. If I don't see you all, have fun!!!
Also, I'm not sure what time everyone was free on Saturday, so feel free to hyjack the thread and figure that out amongst yourselves.
