View Full Version : can someone explain Surly Cross Check top tube cable routing?

Does Surly think people are gonna cable the left brake lever to the rear brake? Why do they have the rear brake cable routed up the right/drive side?

I'd imagine so that when shouldering the bike on your right shoulder you don't get a cable-stop attacking you

um....what's the problem with that?

Nothing, but few people actually do it.

Would make sense to me if it was more of a race frame. Just makes for goofy cabling for 99% of people who will cable the right lever to the rear brake and don't race...

And the routing made no sense to me for right or left hand braking or shouldering. I ended up with a bunch of zip ties to hold the cable in place.

So,no,no one can explain the cable routing to you...

Yeah, I just got the rest of the parts for mine this week and was about to finish building it up and was like, what the...? Gonna look weird and I'm going to have to protect the paint on the head and top tube from cable rub. Oh well... Just seems weird when the rest of the frame seems so well thought out. Off the top of my head I can't even think of any other frames that are done like this.

I've done mine both ways, and it doesn't seem to be a big problem... I'd rather have a brazed on stop for the rear instead of that seatpost clamp thing.... you gotta be real precise with the housing length back there

I argree...a small section of Nokon housing works well for those tight radius curves

but every cross bike I've owned runs TT cable routing and I run standard brake set up with no issues.

Routing: looking Down from saddle non-drive to drive side (L-R)
slot 1 (far left) rear brake (run cable from bar tape around stem to left side) cable runs on left side of seat tube
slot 2 (middle) Front Der. Cable does not cross HT amd routes around left side of ST
Slot 3 (Right) Rear Der. Cable does not cross HT and goes on rt side of ST

works quite dandy, does the Surly stop you from running as such?

The Cross Check runs the two shift cables along the downtube in a tradtional road style...I would assume so that no trickery is needed for the front derailleur.

Only the rear brake cable is run along the top tube.

@Henry Chinaski

Were you lucky enough to get one of the lovely red frames like the picture you posted?

When I ordered mine about a year ago all that was available was the black...boring!!

The black frames have two sets of rackmounts at the rear dropout, have a set of rack mounts on the seatstays, and have a little more tyre clearance due to tube manipulation.

The Surly runs the brake cable along what you are calling Slot 3, which is annoying if you're running the cable from the right brake lever to the rear brakes. Usually you frind the rear brake cable running along what you're caling Slot 1--along the non-drive side.

Got one of the new dark green ones.
