It is getting to the point where I need to start a speadsheet on all the tubular rims available out there. Does anybody know of any site that I can go to that has a list of all the available rims out there. 20 years ago, I could pick up the Nashbar or Performance catalog and it would have all the cycling gear in them. Now, they hardly carry Campy and their wheel selection sucks.

All help is appreciated. Does anybody have a recommendation on training and racing tubular rims or wheels? I have built several sets of wheels in my lifetime, just none recently, and would not hesitate to build another set.

I would like the wheels to be black, and I would like aluminum rims for training and carbon rims for racing.

I'd go with Ambrosio Excellence or Nemesis rims. FIR still makes the ST120 and Mavic the Reflex. Many Euro pro teams not using pre-builts ride on these rims. Of course for Paris-Roubaix, they still use Mavic SSC rims which are now rather hard to find. Not sure if Campag is still making any tub rims. Sun Ringle makes the Vista Cruiserand Velocity makes the Pro Elite and the Escape, all of which I've not seen

If you don't care about machined braking surfaces, I'd go with NOS Mavic GP4's. The older ones with the red labels were 400Gr, the newer ones with the blue/purple label come in at 460gr. I like the old ones and have a small stash of them. Same for Campag tub rims if you can find them.

It really depends on a combination of your weight, riding style and intended purpose. For general everyday use, I used GP4's for over 20 years and recommend them highly. I just peeked over on EBay and sure enough, there are some out there. Don't bother with the GEL280's unless you have some specific use in mind.

I've ridden most of the rims up until about 7 years ago when I finally switched to clinchers and have not ridden tubs much since that time.

When I first started riding, tubs was the only thing and I rode daily on Super Champion Medaille d'Ors which were 260gr and this was in Boston. I weighed about 115lbs then and have always been easy on equipment but when I could afford it, I built up a set of wheels using Fiamme Reds.

Go to the right column and it indicates which rims are tubulars. Not a complete/current list but maybe a starting point.

I wish I had a stack of rims period. I think I might just start buying some, even though my three wheelsets have lasted me forever and I just ordered a couple of sets of Campy tubular rims off e-bay for the new bike. Of course, I just figured out that I could get some new Ambrosio tubular rims that are pretty decent at 340 gms each. I could build a set of wheels in the 1,400 gm category and Ambrosio even makes a set of carbon tubulars that are somewhat affordable.

I forgot how much fun it is to build a bike. LOL
