I blame the emboldeners...

/barring that it would be the cut and run crowd
//not to be confused with the defeatists
///or those immoralists
////slashies going crazy.

Seriously, this is the final test for a U.N. that is losing its grip faster than the League of Nations did in the 30s. It doesn't sound good...because it isn't. Would not be surprised to even see some countries leave the U.N...if they feel they have the upper hand (oil) what can the U.N. really do?

Nothing, because of the oil, any sanctions and/or embargos will be meaningless.

use the threat of other reactionary nations to do some really stupid stuff that screws over their general population.

Was that an emboldening statement?

For one, there is no clear-cut military strategy and is not an option at this point due to the devestation Iran could bring to that region. Then the potential economic catastrophe to the world when it cuts the West off from oil, being the 2nd largest OPEC producer. People talk about military action, but the Air Force/State Dept planners don't even know what to strike, what is hardened, what is substantial, where all the sensitive nuclear sites are. We know very little about Iran, far less than we knew about Iraq. Is there is a single shred of evidence that Iran seeks to build the bomb in the first place? They have the legal right to develop nuclear technology for civilian power, as any sovereign nation does. I'm not buying into anything, especially after how wrong the US got the WMD in Iraq scenario.

Sanctions will have very little teeth since Russia and China will veto it in the UN, so US will have to go it alone with a few European nations (which was anticipated).

At this point, we should really be focused on diplomatic strategies to convince Iran to let the IAEA continue its job unimpeded, ensuring weapons grade uranium is not a goal in the future. It is believed by inspectors who have been to these sites, which are for the most part all of our intelligence, that the potential for a bomb is 5-7yrs away minimum. Bush needs to take this into account, along with everything else that he has turned into fire wrt the M.E., and handle this with diligence. In case people haven't noticed, the border with Iran and Iraq in massive and we do have 140,000+ troops in the region. With our troops bogged down in Iraq trying to prevent full-scale civil war, Iran certainly has some home field advantage.

Hersh talks about Iran military strategy problems here:

Call me crazy, but I can really empathize with the Iranians. Not the "we don't believe in the Holocaust; We hate the Israelis" rhetoric, but the nationalistic (here in 'merica we call that patriotism) desire to do wtf they please without the world telling 'em they can't.

It's easy for us in the west to profess the danger of Iran having nukes. But turn the tables... if the UN were telling us to disarm immediately and that they were going to send inspectors into all of our secure facilities, a defiant good ol' boy who tells the UN to stick it would be very popular at home.

and the fact that their govt. sells it to their people saying "The great Satan America is coming for us next, we need these for deterrance. Look what they did next door"
allows them to use fear to sell as well
