What are you guys running?
I bought my CX bike more for commuting, but I may do an event or 2 this year and it's time for a new set of rubbers. I want something w/ good wear characteristics, that will do well on or off road, and just be an overall compromise.
What came w/ the bike was Kenda Kwicks, but they were pretty well shot when I got the bike, so I have nothing to really go off.
Suggestions, comments, preferences...

I don't run knobbies on the road. They wear fast, make a lot of noise, and are sqirrley in the corners. If you've got one bike, the best bet is to have two sets of wheels. One for knobbies and one for slicks. You will be able to pick up a cheap set of wheels for $100 or less. Shoot, I just bought a set of wheels with DA hubs laced to Reflex rims for $100.

Otherwise, just get really good at swapping tires ...

I was also wondering if I could just put some cross tires on my Merlin road bike , for a dry course???

They'd have to be pretty narrow tires to fit through most road caliper brakes. If cross tires fit (like if you have long reach brakes), then go for it.

I used Ritchie speedmax 32's on my old road bike when I used it for cross. They were a good all-round tire. The only real downside was they were a bit squirrelly on high speed corners on pavement. Had to let out some air to get them past the brakes. That bike probably had a lot more room than a Merlin.

Currently $100 extra isn't just laying around for wheels, then tires, then.... :) Trying to keep cycling as a low cost hobby. I just sold my expensive one and am fighting off the debt from it. ;)
Hoping to find a compromise... I ride it around town, but I hit curbs, fields, and everything else in between while I'm at it. :D
