This is my first century ride. Is it common to not have a route map or offer a route map for riders?

I'm like to analyze or drive the terrain (like I usually do) before long endurance rides.

I noticed that the route was already marked (orange spray paint "NSC 100") along St. Mary's. I have never riden the NSC but I can't imagine there is much to the terrain, pretty flat.

Good Luck

You get a cue sheet when you show up. There isn't a map.

If you really want to know the route, I can probably put it together from memory.

Flat as hell.

Hmm, if that is the case then I might switch from 62 miles to 100. I'm really suffering from a confidence level and figure there's no reason to over do it. There's always next year to hit 100.

You sure? 137 sucks. Most routes take Lexington/Saddle Hill/White Fence between St Marys and OPlaine. - TF

If you can ride 62 miles you can easily ride the 100. Do not wait until next year, you sound like a CUBS fan. You can do it - It's all mental. Okay, not all but 40% at least.

S2H - I imagine hell being really hilly, I have never been there so I will take your word on it. Is it a bore-dumb thing?

So, thanks again Alex... I plugged the waypoints into Mapsource and Topo USA to check out the course. If anyone wants the .gpx file or .crs (for Edge users) let me know...

Hope to meet some of you on the 17th.

What "got one last year"? My advice? 137? Afternoon sun? Driver negligence?

FWIW - the half mile section of 137 is not the least safe part of that ride.

I would guess it would be nice to support the club financially since they are the ones who put the effort in organizing it. If you have any plans to stop at their rest areas then you should pay.

It's only $20.

i hadnt planned on stopping at a rest area. that would be more tacky than riding along a small portion of the route. and even i know that.

Alex-in-Evanston

Of course you can ride the roads that day. The only thing off limits are the rest stops and the sag service.

It is fun to participate, tho. Why not give it a shot, and while you're at it say hello to the swarthy guy on a maroon serotta with a white fork. I'm leaving the park at sunrise - 6:30am.

C'mon you wimps. I spent 10 hours last Sunday in the rain (it rained every single second) on the Harmon.

Rain is no big deal.

Thunder and lightning = no thanks. I'll let them have my $20.

Mr Wood

Most I see when I check Weather.com for Evanston is 40% at noon. It's at 30% from 6 AM to noon when it changes to 40%. My rule of thumb for commuting to work is if it's 40% or less, I ride. But even then, I only have to worry about being on the road for an hour in the morning and an hour after work. I agree with velodev. Rain is increased stopping distance, Lightning is a deal breaker.

We didn't pre-register though (and this is exactly why), so if we don't go we're not out the $$.

RoughRider

The weather for Sunday's ride may be OK or marginal or poor, the forecasts differ...

AccuWeather.com's current forecast shows it staying dry in Evanston until around 4 PM, with some brief showers then, and with more rain in the evening.

I've been preparing for this event for a while now, so it will take more than a questionable forecast to keep me from riding in it - and I avoid riding in the rain for safety, comfort and for maintenance reasons.

Stay tuned to your weather channel, or better yet, take a peek out the window...

Mr Wood
09-16-2006, 07:46 PM
yeah, it's amazing the difference between the weather sites. Weather.com is predicting the apocalypse and Accuweather says it might rain. We are going to drive to the start (one hour from Naperville) before we make a final decision, but for right now it's a go.

RoughRider

Last TV weather analysis I saw from WFLD (6 PM) forecast no rain or thunderstorms until mid afternoon or later. I'm hoping this holds. It looks like there may be a stiff breeze on the way back south from Kenosha.

I have moved up my start time up a bit, as I'm hoping to finish the century by then, so good night...

I hope it's a safe and pleasant ride for all.

Mr Wood
09-17-2006, 06:27 PM
After much back and forth about the weather, it turned out to be a beautiful day. . . until 4 PM. We left the last rest stop to the sound of thunder and kept our fingers crossed but a five to ten minute DOWNPOUR soaked us good. It stopped raining for the rest of our ride to the finish, but I think that is actually worse. Instead of clean rain washing you down, it's all road spray and the yuck it carries with it. Oh well, it's our own fault we were out at that hour instead of finished.

If you were there and saw a guy on a blue Cannondale in a Grateful Dead jersey, then you saw me!

velodev
09-18-2006, 05:46 AM
We were about to close our car doors after packing up when that thunder hit. It couldn't have been timed better. I have conflicting data on how long it took and my pace, etc. etc. ... but in the end, all that matters is I finished my first century safe and proud I never gave up.

A couple of the roads didn't seem the most safe but I guess that is the trade off when you are so close to a major urban area. Typical North Shore people yelling out the window, in the beginning, at us holding them up at a light.

Enormous thanks go out to all the organizers, SAGs, rest area workers, and fellow cyclists.
