So I bought one of those giant inflatable balls that they have at gyms and some wights, and have been doing a some weight workouts in the mornings before I go to school/work.

I've never really lifted weights before, even with the years I spent playing rugby. So far I've been doing curls, whatever it's called when you have the weight behind your neck between your shoulders with both hands and you pull up, whatever it's called when you are sitting on the ball and push the weights straight up above your head and bring tham back down by your shoulder, and where you're laying on your back on the ball and pushing up, like a bench press, but with a weight in each hand, and where you're on your back and arms are spread out and you bring them in to meet above your chest.

My main reasons for the weights are to build up my shoulders, arms, and back up, and get a little definition. I've lost some weight off my waist (though not nearly as much as I need to/want to) and figure that this might help that as well, as I hear that building muscle is one of the best ways to burn fat.

So far I've got 30lb weights, but I think I'm going to get some 20lb's as well, because I can't finish all of my reps with the 30 pounders on two of the arm workouts.

I'm also using the ball as a desk chair at home, and can feel why people recommend that.

Anyway, does anyone have any useful info on different workouts that I can do with this at home? Also, I hear about people doing particular exercises at a time because they compliment eachother. I'm totally ignorant to all of this, and any help would be useful.

Thanks all,

joe

i balance my feet on the ball and do pushups. i've got a book that i'll dig out and see if i can find some more. or you could go ahead and do some of the laird hamilton workouts:
1) get 2 balls...jump onto ball#1 (literally just jump onto it), balance to a squat and jump to ball #2, balance to a squat and jump back to ball #1. repeat many times.
2) balance on ball while holding hand weights, go into squat position, hold hand weights out to side
if you haven't yet broken your neck you could google laird hamilton and workout to get more if you need a good laugh...

I'm pretty sure I'd brake my face open doing that.

I think chuckice is talking about a Bosu ball, which is a smaller half-ball that you can stand on for balance work.

JD, if you're talking about the stability ball/Swiss ball, there are lots of exercises you can do with them. Google and you'll find more than you could ever want. But here's my favorite use for one...

Pin it against the wall behind your back and use it to do squats. Make sure you place it low enough so you can get into a full squat. They're great for ab work, too.

Nope...I'm talking about this...seeing Laird Hamilton perform those workouts on it is pretty amazing. Balancing your feet on it while doing pushups is a great way to extend the pushup.

You ought to see Hamilton jump from ball to ball...he's a freak. And then to balance, squat and hold 10 lbs weights out in front of you... Of course this is the same guy that rides MTB in the off-season with a 50lb weight on the bike.
