View Full Version : Steel Frame Recommendations
sokyroadie 09-12-2006, 02:25 PM Hi,
After riding steel frames for many years I sold them all when I decided to actively get back into cycling and some age group races. As my sig. shows I have 2 Al and 1 Ti bike. I am thinking about buying a steel frameset and switching the components from the Motobecane and then converting the Motobecane into a single speed. I am looking for a non Asian steel frame and looking for a bargain. At the moment the best deal I can find is the Ciocc tig welded 12.5 for $450.00. I have tried all the usual sites, hoping someone has run across a smokin deal on an obscure website. I am looking for a 51-53cm frame.
Thanks,
Jeff
flangy 09-12-2006, 03:04 PM You have a few options...
1) nice steel frames available at www.gvhbikes.com to either build up yourself or have them do it with one of their build kits;
2) fancy steel frames from people like Rivendell or Steelman, Indy Fab or Heron, or...
3) production steel frame bikes from Lemond or Bianchi....Lemond is now closing out the Croix de Fer, will still make the Sarthe, Bianchi still presently making the Eros, Imola, Veloce and Vigorelli road race bikes, or....
4) go to a touring frame, like a Trek 520 or a Bianchi Volpe.
So you have some options....

Fivethumbs 09-12-2006, 03:33 PM You can check RA cycles web site in the steals and deals section. They have Casati steel frames on the cheap. I would go for the Ciocc myself.
bpalk 09-12-2006, 06:26 PM Have a friend that built a Surly Pacer and loves it. I think he bought the frame new for $400 with fork.
dekindy 09-12-2006, 07:00 PM I saw a 54cm Serotta Fierte Steel frame on E-Bay the other day for $595 or so. Not sure if it is still there. I like mine. It comes with a Carbon fork.
TACSTS 09-12-2006, 07:03 PM Check out a Gunnar Roadie. You ought to be able to find one on eBay for around $400. Another option would be a Soma Smoothie. I'd go for the Gunnar though, they're a heck of a nice steel frame, hand-welded in Wisconsin by the Waterford guys for not a lot of $$.
flangy 09-13-2006, 04:47 AM GVH had some of the Gunnar frames--they are really nice! They may have some in stock again--I bet they can order them. They can get any of the Soma frames--that Smoothie can be configured by them with all 105 for around $1400, or $500 for the frame w/ carbon fork only. They have some nice deals going on the Viner Italian steel frames for $800, as well as the Gary V steel frames (made in Oregon) for the same price. F

sokyroadie 09-13-2006, 03:31 PM I saw a 54cm Serotta Fierte Steel frame on E-Bay the other day for $595 or so. Not sure if it is still there. I like mine. It comes with a Carbon fork.
It is no longer for sale, someone in southern Ky bought it - ME!:p
Thanks for the hook-up:thumbsup: It is a larger size than I normally ride therefore I was not searching for a 54cm. I think it will be fine the tt length is actually the same as my Litespeed, standover since it is a sloping tt is no problem, the handlebars may be a little higher but that is ok.
Thanks again dekindy!!!

Thanks for posting that link, now I'm in trouble with the wife if I win the auction on one of his frames, and I'll be looking for a mid '90's C-Record group to hang on it :mad2:
dekindy 09-13-2006, 06:46 PM Wow! I am glad that I could help. I am from southern Indiana originally, Tell City to be exact. I am riding the Bridge-To-Bridge Tour on Saturday, Sept 30th at Rocky Point, Indiana. It is near Tell City and Cannelton, which has a bridge over the Ohio and the Locks and Dam. Any chance you are riding it also? I was debating on whether to take my Schwinn Paramount or my new Serotta Fierte Steel. If I knew you were going to be there I would definitely bring the Serotta!
I hope you like yours as much as I like mine. I have all Ultegra, smooth. I had a professional fit done on my Paramount so all they had all the exact measurements to set up my new Serotta. It cruises well and I feel comfortable on long rides. This is the first time that I don't have to reach for the down tube to shift. What a difference!
sokyroadie 09-14-2006, 01:57 AM Any chance you are riding it also?
No, I am not. I am however going to ride the Hilly Hundred this year - first time since 1990. What size frame do you have? Any idea of the diff. between an 04 and the current model other than the carbon seatstays.
Thanks,
Jeff
