View Full Version : Volers on sale; Performance Ultras So-So
purplepaul 06-03-2004, 06:36 AM Just a heads up that www.velowear.com (http://www.velowear.com) is having a sale on their bibs for $45 if you sign up for their email alerts.
I recently bought some Performance Ultras for about the same price. I can't say I love them. They're okay but the chamois is a bit weak.

What chamois did the Ultras come with? I bought an 03 model with the blue chamois and I really like it. It was the old Elite chamois I think. ANyway, I hear they changed the chamois for 04. Wondering if that is the one you got.
purplepaul 06-03-2004, 07:14 AM Yes, it's the new one. It's a grey color with different densities, supposedly. It just feels soft to me.

The Ultras come with some type of "elastic" chamois. I bought two pair but ended up sending them back as they have a different cut than the Elite Bibs which I like very much (The Ultras were much narrower in the thigh). I ended up getting the Elites which now have a white chamois. The blue one was replaced a few years ago, but the white is still very comfortable.

That's very true. Every time I pull them on, I hear a stitch pop in the chamois area. I love how marketing calls them "supportive for your muscles." All that means, in reality, is that they're tight.

I just got some Performance bibs myself and thought I should have gotten a size larger than I normally do. They are very tight....

White is OK, but not near as nice as the blue one was. Wish they'd have just kept that one. I agree the Ultras are tighter, but for me that's not a problem. I'm not sure I'll buy them with the new chamois based on these reports though. Gonna have to look at another brand. Voler sound OK.
t0adman 06-03-2004, 09:15 AM I still think Voler takes the cake when it comes to value. I'm sold.
Spinfinity 06-03-2004, 09:25 AM If you don't mind wearing their logo they sell Voler shorts even cheaper.
purplepaul 06-03-2004, 10:12 AM For $5, I think it's worth it to get the plain Volers. Never liked the way the hammergels look.

haiku d'etat 06-03-2004, 10:21 AM i found PI shorts to have a very low-slung waist, especially in the front.
performance shorts were kinda small and shorter to the knee, IME.
hammergel shorts (voler) were recently redesigned. no more white panel on the back. i may buy a couple pairs, as hammergel (espresso) works wonders for me on longish rides.
voler shorts get 3 thumbs up IMO. they're all i wear.
Ogalthorpe 06-03-2004, 11:14 AM So I was thinking about getting the Performance Ultra bibs. I'm 6', 295 (think linebacker, not heart-attack waiting to happen). I've had decent luck in the past with the Elite fit. I've tried nashbar, too, but was unsatisfied with the quality (chamois came unsewn). Castelli's were ok, but a bit tight. Now I'm not so sure.
Any recommendations on quality Bibs that will fit a Clydesdale+?

Voler shorts should fit you fine. They have a good sizing chart on their website. I am 5'11" and weigh about 190 and can wear Volers in size L or XL. Based on your size description, I would go for the XL size if I were you.
I've got about 4 pairs of Voler bibs and have used them for 3 years. Best value that I've found for cycling shorts and very comfortable.
