View Full Version : portland question: any races this weekend? can I borrow a bike?
steve_e_f 10-06-2006, 09:16 AM Hi all,
Since I wrote that last thread about maybe moving to Portland we've gotten a lot further along in the process. We just bought tickets to go up tomorrow a.m. (Saturday) and drive around and house hunt for three or four days. We may move by Christmas if all goes well.
Sooooo. I thought "as long as I'm in Portland, why not try and do a REAL CX race?". (our races down here are all dry).
Are there any races on Sunday in the Portland or greater PDX area?
Does anyone have an extra CX bike they could lend or even rent? I tried this once last year and DPCX lent me a bike for a race in seattle. It was a blast.
If anyone does want to lend or rent, I would absolutely respect the bike and vouch and pay for any and all damage if I did any.
If anyone knows of anything...
thanks!
-Steve f.
The General 10-06-2006, 10:19 AM Hey Steve,
Check out www.obra.org for the race on Sunday, Battle at Barlow.
I won't be up there, live in Eugene, this weekend otherwise I might be able to loan a bike if you were really tall...
But there is a Cross Crusade Chat, www.crosscrusade.com, that might be worth posting the same question on, or the OBRA Mailing list, link at the bottom of the OBRA Homepage.
Or maybe call River City or some of the other bike shops in Portland, find the links on the Cross Crusade or OBRA web pages.
Hope that helps, to bad it won't be a real CX race as it will still be dry this weekend :(
Richard
sunnysideup 10-06-2006, 10:20 AM It is cross season in Oregon and you will be hard pressed not to find a cross race. Check out this site. http://www.obra.org/ to find a race, there is one Saturday and one on Sunday. Too bad you won't be here for a Cross Crusade race, but there will still be plent of turn out. Other down fall is that it is still dry here. Suppose to see a little rain today, but this weekend is suppose to be sunny.
What race will you be doing? and what size bike do you ride?
Shane
You can find photos from last weekend's cross race. One day record for turn out in the US. 798 riders

brock 10-06-2006, 10:26 AM Steve - As of right now, looks like I'll be racing in Eugene Saturday and skipping Barlow on Sunday, so if you wanted to race Sunday I could probably hook you up. Drop a PM. - Jeff
steve_e_f 10-06-2006, 10:27 AM Thanks for the replies guys. I'll check the links out that you posted.
I ride a 58cm bianchi right now. 170 cranks, but I'm not picky! I'd bring my own pedals.

steve_e_f 10-06-2006, 10:35 AM yeah Barlow looks perfect. I know right where that is. I see they are on the A,B,C system there. Down here we're 1234 and I'm 3, so would I do B or C? I did a C race up there last year and got somewhere around 10th...
both are 45 min. Up there the crossers seemed faster than here. Are the Bs pretty vicious, and likewise, are the noticably slower?
sunnysideup 10-06-2006, 10:47 AM Race the B's, you will be happier.
The General 10-06-2006, 12:44 PM You can race both according to OBRA, the B's are typically the largest field in the race.
jeremyb 10-06-2006, 03:17 PM i thought maybe we'd have mud this weekend based on what it looks like today, but accuweather.com says its going to be 70f on sunday! and 65f next sunday! and dry
wheres this mud I was promised?
steve_e_f 10-06-2006, 03:59 PM shoot. the whole idea was to come up and let my wife experiece some doom and gloom rain so she'd know what we're getting into if we move. Oh well, maybe Monday or Tuesday will be nasty.

sunnysideup 10-09-2006, 09:08 AM So Steve,
What did you think about our fine cross racing?
Shane
Gripped 10-09-2006, 10:05 AM So Steve,
What did you think about our fine cross racing?

Some of the things he told me ...
1) What's this wet stuff coming out of the sky?
2) The guys up here are lots faster than the SoCal nancy boys.
3) He'll be a regular up here next season.
Glad to meet you Steve. :D
