View Full Version : Still being held.. magnolialover 10-15-2006, 04:34 AM This guy, still being held, without charges, has been deemed not dangerous. What is the deal? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15264274/ rocco 10-15-2006, 09:18 AM Yeah but I feel safer and my personal insecurity issues supersede his. -- Actually, I must concede that the article is rather unclear to me. Snakebit 10-15-2006, 09:32 AM This guy, still being held, without charges, has been deemed not dangerous. What is the deal? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15264274/ If the story is correct, he was picked up on immigration violation and does not wish to go back to Iran. What do you do with him? rocco 10-15-2006, 10:37 AM The article does seem to be somewhat murky for lack of details. The only thing I can gather for sure is that he was tortured, he has filed seven lawsuits and he's still being held in detention. EDIT: We know he says he was tortured. The article doesn't say whether there is any physical evidence of torture. KenB 10-15-2006, 11:08 AM If the story is correct, he was picked up on immigration violation and does not wish to go back to Iran. What do you do with him? Cook him. The only thing I can gather for sure is that he was tortured, he has filed seven lawsuits and he's still being held in detention. I would think that the issue of torture is yet to be proven as well. If he has filed seven lawsuits, he is not exactly in the Tower of London and the situation could well be less than he claims as well as worse than we would like to see. Deportation would seem to be the ultimate solution but to where? rocco 10-15-2006, 11:43 AM Does he have an asylum case pending? Route 66 Domestiques 10-15-2006, 11:48 AM Cook him. From the git-go, the word "torture" has been over-worked. It has just been a grab-bag of generalizations (at best). How has any of these detainees been "tortured?" Be specific. The only torture I'm aware of has been toward Americans without heads or hanging unside down from bridges. rocco 10-15-2006, 11:54 AM I would think that the issue of torture is yet to be proven as well. He says he doesn't want to go back to Iran but we don't know from the article if he has an asylum case pending. The only torture I'm aware of has been toward Americans without heads or hanging unside down from bridges. "The staff at the jail where he was first held "poured hot coffee on my body, they also poured cold ice water on my body," he wrote in one, claiming that staffers also cuffed his hands and feet, which caused "my ankle and lower extremities to swell abnormally." "It is my firm belief that I am constantly subjected to physical abuse (because) of my ethnicity, I am Iranian of Persian birth," he wrote in another, filed this summer. In that lawsuit he claimed that immigration officers forced him to kneel while handcuffed, and then kicked and punched his stomach and kidneys. "As you can imagine, this is very, very painful when you are cuffed from behind," he wrote." If this is in fact true it is torture. There is a group of people on this site that is only happy when they are unhappy. These are the whining weinies; are you in this group? I think I just found one. BTW, the word "if" can be used to note that these are statements that the jury is still out on. It helps the reader seperate the comments that the author feels are useful from the ones that he/she feels are not that useful, but may later be useful once the status of "if" has been removed. It's a way of recognizing a possibility without giving it more credit than it deserves. Therefore, I agree, "if" moves no thought forward, but that does not make it useless. It was not designed to move thought forward, nor are alot of other words that are useful in making a point. |
