View Full Version : Mavic ES vs. Fulcrum racing 1
shoelace 10-19-2006, 02:54 PM I am about to build my new bike , 07' Specialized Tarmac sl, 07' Campy record.....I just need to get wheels and it is between the Mavic ES and Fulcrum racing 1.... I currently have Mavic Kysriums ssc on my old bike but I have never rode on the Fulcrum's ...Any advice or opinion would be appreciated
SilasCL 10-19-2006, 03:16 PM I don't see the appeal of the Mavic ES. They're Ksyriums, but the rims are a bit less deep and are $200 more. You save 15g, while trading off a tiny bit of aeroness, so you may as well get Ksyrium SLs.
So, let's compare SLs with Fulcrums. $200 more for the fulcrums, rims are 1 mm deeper, and weight is about identical. Both will have excellent build quality and are known to be pretty bomber.
Get whichever one tickles your pickle, or the slightly cheaper SLs if money is a concern.

Well...how much are SLs going to run? If you're getting a deal, cosmic carbones might enter the equation as well. 250 grams for double the rim depth, it would be my choice if money was less of an object.

KaizFJ 10-19-2006, 04:42 PM The ES wheels look 10x better than any fulcrum or standard sl. The slight weight savings is just an extra thing. That s-works frame would look killer with black/red wheels.

You can get the Fulcrums for $599.

IMO they're better looking, and more exclusive than the ES's at $200 cheaper it should be an easy decision.
ROGER79 10-20-2006, 11:22 AM You won't be getting "Racing 1's" for $599... maybe Racing 3's or 5's.
KaizFJ 10-20-2006, 11:49 AM It does say racing1 for 598 us. That looks like an awesome deal!
ROGER79 10-20-2006, 12:10 PM I'd buy 2 pair and sell one.....

I take it you didn't click on the link? :D
I ordered a set of 2006 Eurus from 11speed back in June or July and was very tempted by the Racing 1's but I got suckered in by the G3 Bling of the Eurus.
SPINDAWG 10-20-2006, 03:46 PM I used the Mavic ES wheels on my '06 Tarmac SL.These paired with the Veloflex black tires makes for a nice ride. My experience with these wheels started sour as I broke a spoke after putting a little over 300 miles on them but Mavic was quick to relace the wheel within a week's time and 4000 miles later I have been estatic with them.Plus they match my Tarmac rather well.....
spookyload 10-21-2006, 08:51 AM Be careful with 11speed. Their prices are great, but make sure you check the shipping rates before finalizing the purchase. They charge about $110 for shipping on a wheel set, and that must be factored into the cheap prices. I was about to order a set of record ultra torque cranks from them till I saw shipping was $75 to the USA. That made them more expensive than probikekit.com.
DIRT BOY 10-21-2006, 10:16 AM on Vento wheels. Same rate I pay for Express Shipping from Extralite for wheels form Italy. That includes insurance as well. Packages usally get here in 5-8 days.
spookyload 10-21-2006, 06:00 PM I almost ordered a record ultra torque crank from them till I saw a $70 shipping fee for a crank. Their shipping rates are real screwy.

Yeah, their shipping rates have really jumped up. When I bought my Eurus in July I paid $35 for Fedex shipping to Canada. Last month I was about to order a cassette and a bunch of other items but didn't go through with it after I saw how much they wanted for shipping.
Thankfully there's Probikekit!
