i want to convert my Velomax Tempest 2s into carbon tubulars but Velomax wont sell me the parts or do it either......so i'm looking to buy the rims and do it myself. question is where can i get carbon rims? zipp sells them but says they won't work with velomax hubs because the spokes thread into the hubs (don't understand but....).

The problem will be getting the correct length spokes with threads at both ends.

all dealers have access to zipp rims, so that's no problem (qbp stocks them)

again, you're problem is gonna be getting ahold of the correct size spokes.

easton uses zipp's 404 rim on they're tempest 2 carbon wheelset, so if you contact easton and get "replacement" spokes for that, you'll be set and then just need the rims.

otherwise, talk to easton, get the hub measurements, then you need to pick/find a rim u like and qbp has some spoke calculator software. then you need to find a shop that has a spoke cutter/threader so they can thread both ends of a spoke

good luck with that project

yeah I priced the 404 rims at 450.00 ea. that's retail....

i think i'll buy a like new set of used wheels for 900 bucks or so

it seems that the carbon wheels have an extremely high profit margin as there's not much competition yet .....everyone is very touchy about selling just the rims

Yes the profit margin is very high.
For example Gigantex (big taiwan manufactor) sells carbon rims for $90 each, and that is their price if you just buy one at the time. Buy larger volymes and the price drops. So you can image what the manufactor cost is. I would guess $40-50

Does gigantex sell to consumers, or only to distributors or retailers?

They sell to anyone who is interested. The only difference is the price of course.

I tried contacting them via email and had no reply for two weeks. Is there any magic trick to getting those rims?

Taiwan carbon rims do not compare to Zipp rims. The Gigantex rim will weigh about 500 to 550 grams compared to 400 grams for Zipp 404. The profit margin on a Zipp rim is not the big at all.

ligero -how do you know the rims do not compare to Zipps? And where did you get the weights from since there site says much less than you stated?

Not slaggin you just asking where you got your info from (ie experience???)....
