View Full Version : What spoke length?

I have a set of unused, but old, Campy Record Strada box type tubular rims that I want to build some wheels out of. I am planning on using the 2007 Record Hubs, but the problem is that none of the spoke calculators I have come across have these old rims and these relatively new hubs in them. I tried to find the dimension data on the 2007 hubs, but nothing is listed on the Campy website that I could find.

Does anybody know if the dimensions for the 2007 hub are the same as the 2006 hub?

Can anybody give me spoke lengths for a wheel build using these components with a 3x pattern and 36 holes?

What I have been getting is 299mm on the front wheel, 298mm on the non drive side of the rear wheel, and 296mm on the drive side of the rear wheel.

Lastly, does it matter if I use 299's on the non-drive side of the rear wheel instead of the 298's because I cannot find 298's sold individually and I don't want to buy an entire box when I only need 18 of them.

What are you using as an ERD? The new hubs are are the same specs.
front
F = 39
C = 35

rear
right
F = 46
C = 16.4
left
F = 44
C = 36

Using my calc, I would use 300mm for the front and non drive and 297mm. The ERD is the most important measurement so I personally measure every rim.

Did you have the ERD for the rim to be 617.6? That is what my database has and I have found it to be quite accurate

The program/spreadsheet I am using lists the rim as a Campy Strada and it has the ERD listed at 614. How can I measure the ERD?

The hubs are listed as 2002 Campy Record & Chours, but the dimensions are pretty close to those listed above. The program gives the following:

Front hub:
F=39
C=35.4

Rear hub:
Left Side:
F=44
C=36.8

Right Side:
F=46
C=16.8

If I throw the numbers provided by you guys into the program, I get the following results:

Front spoke length = 300.4
Rear left = 299.4
Rear right = 297.2

So, do you guys think the 300's will work for the front and non drive side and the 297's for the drive side based upon the above? I wish I knew how to measure everything and plug the exact data into the program. I am sitting here worrying about millimeters.

Curlybike,

Thanks for the offer in the other thread to cut my spokes down to length for the cost of postage, but I would prefer to get everything right to begin with. Plus, I can find the 300's and 297's sold in singles for $0.99 for black DT Revolutions which is the spoke I really want for these wheels.

Did you plug the # that I gave you into your formula. Some measurements do not take the nipple head thickness into account. I prefer the spoke to come into or very near the bottom of the slot in the nipple. If you used the correct erd than I would use the 300 and the 297 without fear. I have not run my program to see what it calls for. I have done spokes for guys so that the butted threaded end was only about 15 mm for maximum weight reduction, at their request. The Phil Machine is a unbelievably neat tool. Rethreads the spoke without cutting metal out of the threaded area, rolls the thread. Cant tell the difference from original. Offer still stands

Plugging the info that the two of you gave me for the hbs and the rims into my spreadsheet/program, I get the following:

Front: 300.4 mm
Left Rear: 299.4 mm
Right Rear: 287.2 mm

I think I am going to go with the 300's and the 297's. I'm not too worried about weight on these wheels because they are everyday riding wheels (i.e., I am 5' 8" and 150 lbs and have yet to break a spoke with tens of thousands of miles in the saddle). However, I am going to build a set of 28 hole Record Crono rims with Zipp 202 hubs and I might take you up on the offer on those wheels. I could order the spokes pretty long and get rid of most of the double butted portion of them because the front is going to be radial and the rear is going to be 2x.

What do you think of spline drive spoke nipples?

I have used Spline drive nipples, and they were fine except for being a PITA to work with without the Park style wrench. After many sessions of fussing with seized AL nipples, I swore off all AL nipples, and all bur refuse to use them for anything. I might have some new spline drive nipples around here that I will send you for the postage, as I will never use them and are a bit obscure to sell on Ebay. Tell me your color choice, and I will search. If you are not locked into the black, Wheelsmith spokes are the flashiest and really sparkle as the sun hits them. Guess I am part crow, I likes sparkly stuff.

I have black ,1 bag, and I have gold, 1 bag, 14G spline drive nipples, I have the standard wrench and a Park style wrench that cost me $12.00, I think.

Again, thanks for the offer. I ordered the 300's from the site you sent me because the Amazon site didn't have them in black. Then, I ordered the 297's from Cambria Cycles in California at 99 cents each and I bought a bag of the red splined nipples for a little under $25. I ordered the Campy 2007 Record hubs last night, so I should have everything to build these wheels in a week or two.

I decided to go with the Revolutions on the drive side of the wheel because I have yet to break a spoke. If things go bad with them, I'll just rebuild the wheel with a heavier spoke on the drive side. Hopefully, there won't be a catastrophic failure.

Thanks for all your help with this, and I'll post a pic once the wheels are built and another pic once I have the bike built. If more people were like you, this world would be a lot better place to live in.

trying to be helpful! I love working on wheels, makes everything else go away!

Yep, that is the way I feel, but I apply it to working on bikes and cars, and going biking, hunting, shooting, and fishing. When I am doing those activities, I don't worry about anything. Right now, I am trying to get this bike finished by Christmas.
