Just got into road riding this past summer. I hardly know anyone that owns a bike, let alone rides regularly. Looking for some group rides before the snow comes this year or for the spring next year. I'm in Hamilton but I'd be willing to drive around the GTA somwhere or Niagara area to meet up. Anyone belong to Hamilton/St.Catherines/Oakville etc. cycling clubs?

Thanks!

There is a group ride leaving out of the Oakville Cyclepath every sunday and I know that New World Cycle shop has organized rides as well. Oakville Cyclepath a ride out to Niagra once or twice a year. Your best bet if you looking for people to ride with is to join a club. Oakville has one, Hamilton or McMaster has some sort of a training center, and I'm sure there are more in that area for sure. Check out the OCA website for a list of local clubs.

Cheers

I live and ride in Hamilton. There are some good group rides in the area. There is Neworld cycle in burlington that rides monday, wed. and sunday(pretty fast rides+38kms per hour). There is Ancaster cycle which the locals organize a ride tues, thurs and saturday(advanced/intermediate type of ride 30-35kms per hour). But the ride i would recommend(i ride mostly with this group)would be Scattalon cycle. They have group rides on tues(beginner)wed and sunday. Sunday is split into two groups. If you go with "B"group and find it too easy then they will recommend going with the "A" group. The "A"group is also most like racing though....Shoot me a pm if you need anymore info.

Check out Scattalons website.

:) Guilty as charged...Just moved out to Milton. Looking for others to ride with around the GTA. Once the nicer wweather comes, I'll post up here, arrange a couple group rides...take turns being ride host, ride a few diff. areas.

Does anyone know whats involved in joining a club? Im assuming its a little racing biased, however are beginners welcome?

Cheers

Hey guys. I've been in touch with the Oakville cycling club. The gentlemen that organizes the rides said that there is no pressure to join. He also said they are a great bunch of guys that cycle regularly and apparently they "all leave their ego's at home" etc. He told me to come out to a ride a few times to see if eveything is compatible once the weather is nicer and then choose to join if I want. I'm considering this route. I've also considered St. Catherines cycling but I'm told that they are more racing focused.

20 pounds eh Norm? Better hope the snow melts soon!

Smiley, I did some riding up in around Milton(also around Campellville,Flambourgh too)in September. I don't think there is a better place to ride in Southern Ontario. Man, no matter which way you ride its a great workout, with tons of scenery. Yeah, when the weather breaks shoot me a PM and we will have to get some group rides happening.

I'm a member of the St. Catharines Cycling Club and it's a fantastic group. Definitely a bit focused on speed at times, but there are always the regular guys chillin' at the back.

What part of Hamilton are you in?? I'm in Dundas and Freewheel and Pierik's both run group rides suited to beginners. The pace of both rides hoover at about 25-30km/h on the flat. They both have a no-drop policy. Freewheel's ride is on Monday evening at 6pm or so and Pierik's is on Saturday at 9:30am. I know your post was from last summer, but I assume you're still looking for people to ride with.

I usually ride from Bayview/Major Mack to Warden and then North from there for as long as necessary. I will be riding Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Since my last post almost a year ago, I like to think that I've improved... plus all the winter training I've done this year is paying off :)

There are usually some cyclists leaving from the park at Elgin Mills and Woodbine.

I often ride with a small group out of the Al Palladini fitness centre at Rutherford and Islington - East side. It's older guys so the pace averages about 29 KPH. The paceline discipline is erratic, hammer, slow down, race through the Caledon hills, stop and wait, stop for coffee and then try to work together to get everyone home. They will leave at 9:00 AM Sat and Sunday, I'm guessing

Hmm... just looked at the info for the Toronto Donut Ride. Looks a bit intimidating, especially the section on Highway 7.

Anyone have any experience with the rides organized by the Toronto Bicycling Network. Are the riders friendly and welcoming of newbs?

TBN allows non-members to ride with the group for $5 as a trial before deciding on joining the club. I participated with their group ride once a few years ago. They were friendly and welcoming. There have a few organized bike outings weekly. You may want to pay the $5 and try out the origanized rides. I am considering joining the club myself this year ...
