For those that own one, pros/cons? Is it held in high regard in the 'cross world? Looking to buy one, not sure if the components are worth the $$. Thanks.

Looking to buy one, not sure if the components are worth the $$. Thanks. SpeedM3 11-05-2006, 04:36 AM I own a 2005 X01 with Shimano 105 kit. I have 13 races on it and it has suited me perfectly well, especially as a new cross racer. Perfectly reliable, capable, and not overstated. I have only chosen to change the cassette, wheelset, and saddle over the last two years, all by choice. I don't see too many of them around, maybe one or two per race other than mine. Brands like Kona, Redline, Rock Lobster, etc, seem to dominate the California scene. For me it's about reliability (as a beginner), performance once I get my fitness up to speed, and versatility of the geometry and components (nothing too expensive, able to hit the road or commute without worry). I have no regrets and will race this bike until it quits on me. Good luck. alem1583 11-05-2006, 01:31 PM I have a 2001 XO1 that I got as a frame and fork used. I can tell you that it's nice and stiff, and tracks pretty well. At this pricepoint (fuji, redline, etc), almost everything except maybe Surly is going to be Aluminum. While it's pretty jarring at times, it's OK, esp since you never ride it for more than an hour or so at a time... I also have older Bontrager Select wheels that I use on my cross bike, and they are virtually indestructable, definately better than the Alex rims that are spec'd on the fuji... As for it's repuation...probably the same as any other trek, there aren't that many, to my suprise in the NY/PA races I've done. But I have seen another guy with a 2001 like mine, so their durability isn't a question. No one has ever commented on mine, either good or bad, but I don't think that happens much in cross unless you have a high zoot Ridley or a custom steel. Hope this helps... blackhat 11-06-2006, 06:30 AM For those that own one, pros/cons? Is it held in high regard in the 'cross world? Looking to buy one, not sure if the components are worth the $$. Thanks. a friend has one that I've ridden occasionally. I can't offer much insight as to the component spec as his isn't stock at all, but the frame's impressive imho. lots lighter (and stiffer) than my surly. put a good stiff crankset/bb on it and it's uber raceworthy. IIRC its got cable routing for either a top or bottom pull front derailer, which is sort of cool too. jhowell 11-06-2006, 07:37 AM I got a great deal on a 2000 frame / fork - I love it. I built it up with pretty nice parts (to me) for a couple hundred bucks. I've never ridden another CX but I agree that it's fairly stiff, and comfortable enough for an hour or two. Very light. I'm running a 1x 8 (another first) - couldn't be happier! I guess I should mention I'm around 165 lbs. and like to ride hard - so far I trust this frame. http://static.flickr.com/103/288202335_4ddd32a4b7.jpg?v=0 Kram 11-06-2006, 08:22 AM That's what I have. Got the F/F used here on RBR classifieds. Since it's my 1st cross bike, I don't have any comparisons. That said, it's light enough, tracks well, climbs better than me, and seems to be durable. arctic hawk 11-07-2006, 03:49 AM I have a 2001 Trek X01 & love it! It's very durable & I can certainly attest to that for the number of crashes I have been in during cyclocross races as well as a meeting with a car. Aside from cyclocross, it's my daily mode of transportation to/from work, I participate in duathlons (road tires on 2nd wheelset) in summer, & the weekend ride with friends & family whether they be fast or slow. weltyed 11-07-2006, 08:05 AM cant be certain, but i think i recall seeing the current year modle with the ability to run der. cables on both the top tube or the down tube. i thought that was a very nice option. still ended up just buying a frame, but not trek. i think i saw about 4-5 at a race this weekend. lots more redlines. jhowell 11-07-2006, 08:25 AM cant be certain, but i think i recall seeing the current year modle with the ability to run der. cables on both the top tube or the down tube. i thought that was a very nice option. On my 2000, it does have the option (for both derailleur cables). I'm running up top. hellboy 11-08-2006, 04:46 AM I love my OX1 http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g185/robsfuel/000_0602.jpg blackhat 11-08-2006, 06:57 AM cant be certain, but i think i recall seeing the current year modle with the ability to run der. cables on both the top tube or the down tube. i thought that was a very nice option. still ended up just buying a frame, but not trek. i think i saw about 4-5 at a race this weekend. lots more redlines. I think all of them have had both a cable stop on the DT and on the ST so you could run a top or bottom pull front derailer. agreed, it's a cool option, I think the mt cycle stumptown has that too. gobes 11-08-2006, 08:35 AM hellboy, what fork do you have on your xo1? Did changing the fork change the handling a lot? I ask because most forks are not as long as the ones that come on the bike. hellboy 11-08-2006, 10:45 AM its just a carbon knock off I got it off ebay a lot of carbon forks come from the same manufacture and sell them off to who ever to put there name on them I'm happy with it. I don't think it changed the handling that much but I do know its about 100 grams lighter than the one that came with it, the carbon dose knock out a lot of small bumps, I'm waiting for my wound up to come in hope to have it by next week. bjunsveltie 11-14-2006, 02:11 PM Ive got a Disco 2000 - Anyone ever convert it to a SS ? Seems like it is the right frame for the job- clockwork13 11-14-2006, 03:21 PM I really appreciate all the replies! I've succumbed to the trend and just got a Redline Conquest, which is a great bike to say the least. If the funding had been in greater abundance, I definitely would have gone with the Trek. Thanks again! Kram 11-14-2006, 04:15 PM When I was looking, I was eyeing up Redlines. If I hadn't found the deal I did on my XO1, that's what I'd be riding. |
