View Full Version : Will this be a good build
halifaxrider 11-05-2006, 12:38 PM Thinking of building this wheelset at excelsports.com.
The following are the options I picked:
Front Wheel
DT Hub 240S Front Black/Red 28 Hole 92g
DT Rim RR 11 Road Black 28 Hole 412g
14/15 double butted black spokes, 2 cross lacing 200g
Silver alloy nipples 8g
Total for the Front Wheel 712g
Rear Wheel
DT Hub 240S Road Rear Black/Red 28 Hole Shim 248g
DT Rim RR 11 Road Black 28 Hole 412g
Drive Side 14/15 double butted black spokes, 100g
Non-Drive Side 14/15 double butted black spokes, 2 cross lacing 100g
Silver alloy nipples 8g
Total for the Rear Wheel 868g
Would do you folks think? Should I make any changes before I order?
Thank you for your input.
BTW: Total price is $630.

Just so you know, the rr1.1 rims weight much more than 412 now, because they now come with double eyelets to fix their problem with cracking.
Bigfooter 11-05-2006, 12:50 PM I think the "Double" version is only with 32h rim. 28h rim is still the light, single eyelet model.

What do you want to use the wheels for? How much do you weigh?
If race only, have you considered looking at Mavic Reflex Tubulars? You lose like 40g/rim.
Also, if race only, a 15/17ga spoke might be nice, with radial up front, radial non-drive, 2 cross drive.
If you're <155lbs or so, you could probably train on 15/17s. If you're more, 14/15's are your best bet, and that build will make a good training and racing wheel. If you want to do CX maybe going to 32 spokes is better - it doesn't add much weight, but it does give a bit more strength to the wheel.

Sorry I did not mention this, I'm 144 lbs and plan to race with these wheels.
How about DT 14/17g Revolution Spokes instead?
radial up front, radial non-drive, 2 cross drive This is what I wanted at first, but will they have the same durability/reliability as 2X and 3X?

I would go for the 14/17s
The radial will be fine. Look at Mavic Ksyriums, etc. A LOT of factory built wheels are radial, and you're not a big guy.
I ride radial up front, and 2cross drive/radial non on the back (Powertap/OP) and have no problems with the rims getting untrue.

Thank you for your input, its been very helpful.
I will go with radial pattern in front and non-drive, and change to 14/17 spokes. I just hope they can build them using 'black' spokes.
Cheers:)
I think the "Double" version is only with 32h rim. 28h rim is still the light, single eyelet model.
Yeah that is true, except on dt swiss's 1450 wheels, where the rear 28h rim is double eyeleted, which makes one think.
the Inbred 11-05-2006, 04:15 PM are you more interested in a stiffer wheel, or a wheel that gives a little?
there is a radial specific 240 front hub.
ultimobici 11-05-2006, 05:23 PM And DT won't warranty hubs laced radially unless it is the radial specific front hub.

That gives a little.
If there is a 240 radial specific hub, than that of course would be better.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
GScot 11-06-2006, 05:19 AM Sounds like a good combo. I weigh 150 and ride on some terrible roads. 3000 miles ago I bought a wheelset from excel for everyday. 28 Revolution spokes up front laced 2x. Rear wheel 32 spoke 3x with Revs on non-drive, 14/15 drive. No cracks on my DT rims. I did use Ultegra hubs instead of DTs. Zero maintenance so far, perfectly true out of box and still that way.
ampastoral 11-06-2006, 05:30 AM the rims are great, if you get good ones. i had single eyeleted 32h dt rims laced 3x all the way around to chorus hubs. after 3000 miles i had a crack in the rear rim. it's now the double eyeleted version. i weigh b/t 145-150 depending on the time of year.
if you are just racing, take the chance with the 28h single eyelet. if you are doing any more on them, i'd go with the 32 rear....just MHO, etc etc
the Inbred 11-06-2006, 06:39 AM That gives a little.
should be a dandy wheelset. who is going to build it? post up the weight when the wheels are built...i'm rather curious to see how light they will be.

The people at excelsports.com will build them. I will post the true total weight when they arrive. But its 1,438g for a pair (not including skewers) as posted on the order page.
Thanks again guys for all your input.
Cheers:)
halifaxrider 11-06-2006, 11:19 AM Change in plans. This wheelset seems lighter and cheaper.
Front wheel
Campagnolo Record Hub Front 07 Black 32 Hole 116g
DT Rim RR 11 Road Black 32 Hole 416g
Revolution spokes, radial laced 144g
Black alloy nipples 8g
Total weight front wheel 684g
Rear Wheel
Campagnolo Record Hub Rear 07 Black 32 Hole 231g
DT Rim RR 11 Road Black 32 Hole 416g
Drive Side Revolution spokes, 2 cross lacing 72g
Non-Drive Side Revolution spokes, radial laced 72g
Black alloy nipples 8g
Total for the Rear Wheel 799g
Total weight 1,483g (with skewers I believe)
Total price $456 - about $155 cheaper than my previous choice.
Will this mean that I need a campy cassette, or can I still use SRAM?

You need a Campy cassette with that hub, and it won't work with a Shimano/SRAM drivetrain without some serious rigging. I recently bought some wheels from Excel after hearing all the good things about them on this site, and after running different permutations of their wheel builder ad infinitum. I've only put around 100 miles on them, but I'm totally happy with them so far.
I actually called in the order and explained the type of riding I planned to do, my weight, and got their advice. I had a general idea (kind of like you) but they filled in the details. I would recommend you doing the same. On multiple occasions I've called them with orders or questions and everyone I've ever spoken with there has been very knowledgeable and helpful.
800lbgorilla 11-07-2006, 07:58 AM Sounds like a great wheelset. Used to live in HFX, and that'll be just fine for the roads there.
You should verify with excel what shipping company they use for shipping wheelsets to Canada (I assume you're in Halifax).
In addition to probably getting nailed with the HST, UPS and FedEx will charge you a customs brokerage fee that can be as much as CAD$100. No such fees if shipped USPS, although you'll wait a bit longer.
Good luck.
