If I have a layer of old glue on my rim, can I put tufo tape on top of it? I have heard of euro cross racers using a combination of tape and glue (cyclocrossworld.com has some sort of tubular tape), but the Tufo tape is never mentioned specifically. I have always glued my tires but was given some Tufo tubular tape to try.

My personal belief is that will be problematic because the tape will adhere to the existing glue, which is fine, but will tend to stay put when you remove the tire, which is not fine. If you are going to use the tape plus glue method, go to it, but be aware that subsequent remounting of a new or repaired tire may be a problem, plus the center section of the tire may sit so high that water enters into the glue joint and causes failure of the bond.

Those are just my experiences, maybe I did not do it right.

When I emailed Tufo, they claimed the tape used alone was fine for cross, but I have never met anyone who has used this method. I have used it alone on the road and it works nicely.

At this point in the season, I'd just glue them on if it were me.

My wheels had a light layer of glue when I first got them. I put the tufo tape right over the glue and then the tire with no glue. Lasted for two races. It might have been fine if I put glue on the tires also. The tape stuck to the rim and the tires just peeled off after the second race (which was very wet). Then I just peeled all the tape off and went with glue. 3 layers on the rim and 2-3 on the tire. Seems to be holding up way better.

glue it is -- the tape seemed too easy anyway.

Use more glue that you think you should (if you're familiar with road tubie glueing). Layer up three coats on the rim -- make the coats even but not too thin. If you're gluing up Tufo tires for the first time, I recomend three coats on the tire as well since the Tufos suck up glue.

aND CHECK THE STUPID THINGS EVERY SINGLE WEEK BY LETTING THE AIR OUT AND MAKING SURE THEY ARE STILL AFFIXED TO THE RIM oops, sorry about caps, not a touch typist...
