See bit "special" roadbikes of Steve Peat (DH world champion) and Paul Turner (ex Rock Shox, now Maverickbike.com ):

The Maverick bike is actually pretty cool lookin IMO (maybe because of the Campa shifter) even if the whole concept is not making any sense to me. I'm thinking between :thumbsup: and :cryin:

The suspension on the first bike's KILLING ME!!!!! WHYYYYY?? oh WHYYY??? What did the bike ever do wrong?????????

It's sooo nice.... Oh man... Life's unfair..... Poor bike.

...were used in Paris-Roubaix in the early 1990s; there were some other brands as well that tried suspension to smooth out the cobbles. Photo below is of Andrei Tchmil at P-R in 1994 riding with a suspension fork.
