I like to clane my chain off the bike and fitted these a few months ago, have struggled to get them to work but have now got it going beautifully - thought it may make someone elses life eaiser so will summarise here, nothing original, just stuff I cobbled from a google search:
To remove the link
*Get your chain slack, you can take the front part of the chain off the smallest chainring, but find putting it on the smallest ring of the casette is good enough
*Use a paperclip straightened out then the ends bent at right angles
(like this I_____________I ) and hook the links about 3 or 4 away from each end of the powerlink to create a nice loop of slack in the chain.
*Use yr fingers and squeeze the connecting link together, then do a slow click of your fingers
*I had struggled with pliers and had inconsistent results until I did this, works like a breeze on my SRAM powerlink and EMC link, haven't tried it on the wippermann connex link, but cant see why it wouldn't.

You don't have to squeeze it to open it. You just need to grip the links on each side and slide them together. The link comes right apart.

park makes a cool tool (MLP-1) for popping open the quick links, I think it retails for about $14, I have used mine several times at home and a million times at the shop, it makes life very easy

The whole point of a quick link is to make chain removal tool free. Now I gotta find the little paper clip tool before I can open the link. Just get a Wipperman and be done with it. I, too, struggled with SRAM links in the past. It IS a thing of the past since I've been using the Wipperman link. No tools, no matter how dirty and grimy the chain is.

I agree, tool-free is the purpose, and a paperclip wont be there when I need it most, I'll try a wipperman connex

I agree with Mel, the Wipperman is hard to beat. My LBS sells KMC chains that have a removable link and the Park Tool mentioned above is the way to go on those so I can easily remove the link at home for a thorough cleaning of the chain. I still carry a Wipperman link and a chain tool with me on all my rides to get me home if I do break a chain.
