View Full Version : Cervelo R3 vs De Rosa king
veloci1 11-14-2006, 06:29 PM Which frame woudl you get? i am being offered either one (there is some $ increase for the de rosa) but, i am looking for something that handles as well as my R2.5. My brother is buying my R2.5, so i need to make up my mind on what frame to buy.
i love the way De rosa knig looks, but, i wonder if there is a real big difference in handling and quality between the 2.
any feedback will be appreciated.
richardnogonwithears 11-14-2006, 09:04 PM DeRosa all the way. You're buying tons on heritage and even more in the handling dept. i sell both DeRosa and Cervelo.
trip221 11-15-2006, 06:58 AM I don't know which one to choose, but make sure your R2.5 isn't part of the recall first - then it's an R3 for free!
uzziefly 11-15-2006, 07:10 AM R3 for sure for me :) Would love to have one.. Hmm, try out both bikes... See which speakto you better and of course, which fits better.
veloci1 11-15-2006, 08:35 AM My R2.5 is not part of the recall. i have ridden the R3 and it is just amazing. light , stiff and great in the down and up hills.
i have not ridden a De Rosa King, but, it has always been the dream bike. i just do not see paying $1500 more for the De Rosa. will i be getting that much more perforamnce and quality out of it?
jmoryl 11-15-2006, 11:45 AM As an impartial observer, it seems that there are more Cervelo failures (both R2.5 and R3) than should be the norm for an expensive bike. And some of these are not just the ones covered by the recall. I like the DeRosa better, but you should choose based on fit, use, etc. in any case.
SPINDAWG 11-15-2006, 12:24 PM The King is a great ride and seems like DeRosa tried to duplicate the lively feel of a good steel SLX frame in the characteristics of the King. They didn't go overboard in making the bb monstrously stiff, another words.
If I had to choose between the two....I'd choose the King knowing that a choice is based more on personal history with DeRosa, emotion and an affinity for Italian bikes. If emotions like this click your tumblers then you wont care that the numbers don't add up in practical terms versus the Cervelo.
The Cervelo has a great geometry and nice lines..plus rear stays that look like their sole purpose is to hold the rear brakes and not really needed other than that. Its a fast handling bike that isn't without it's past problems and a look into the bare headtube area sheds a little light. There is little support for the lower bearing race and of course the bearing races are not replaceable. The bb is still made in two pieces, which means that standard bb's try to push the two halves apart and sometimes do.
Being the Italian bike fan that I am..it's not suprising that I'd spend the money on the DeRosa...thanks for reading!
rkdvsm 11-15-2006, 01:32 PM Both are great, but I agree with a previous sentiment. Will getting a more expensive bike make you perform better?

Very unlikely. That's like saying that a different easel will make you a better painter. That being said, IMO, nothing rides like a Derosa. You might not be faster on it, but you might like it a lot better. I've ridden and owned dozens of bikes through the years, including a couple of custom frames from top-line builders. I own 3 bikes now. Two of them are DeRosas. I'll be 64 in another month, and if I ever buy another bike, chances are very, very great that it'll be another DeRosa.

The psychological factor (liking it more) is enough for me to spend the extra cash.
