View Full Version : E-Bay steal. Serotta 20th Anniv CSI
Len J 11-17-2006, 05:27 AM I was wasting time the other night on e-bay and came across this 20th annivarsary Serotta CSI....in exactly my size.
For those of you unfamiliar....Serotta did a special edition Lugged steel CSI with hand cut TDF lugs, an internal rear brake cable guide, & In pearl white for the celebration of their 20th annivarsary in 1992. Only 35 of these were made.......all of them were brazed by Dave Kirk. This is Number 19.
I have seen 2 others live and they are gorgeous........so when I saw the auction I was interested......when I saw that there had been no bids with 10 minutes to go....I got more interested.....when I noticed that the initial expected bid was for $789.00 for the frame & fork......I decided to give it a shot........I contacted the seller to get more info & he told me "This is a used frame.....it's 14 years old and it has been ridden.......there are the blemishies you would expect for a frame this old that has been ridden."
Frankly, I really expected to have someone snipe me.....the price & lack of activity was just too attractive. With less than 3 minutes left, I placed a bid......& won.
2 days later the frame arrived. I fully expected that I might have to have it repainted..........but no, other than a little dirt, a small scratch on the TT, minor paint damage around the BB, where the headset hits the frame & a scratch where a chain ws dropped, the frame is pristine. Everything can be easily fixed with a little touch up paint.
I'm not sure what the build will be, I really wasn't expecting to be buying a bike this week.
Anyway, enjoy the pictures.
Who says there are no great buys on e-bay?
Len
AlexCad5 11-17-2006, 05:34 AM Very pretty. The paint is really pearly, and and with on obvious dings. I guess the guys definition of "used" and "ridden" isn't the same as ours. The problem with ebay is there are too many good deals. There is almost always a bike I really would like to buy. Have fun with the build.
Allez Rouge 11-17-2006, 05:38 AM I just told physasst that he sucks for scoring that Soma, so I guess you REALLY suck for this one. Wow.
Is that a 56? Please tell me it's a 56, so I can be less jealous.
Dave Hickey 11-17-2006, 05:39 AM Len, that is an amazing find....lugs, pearl paint, Columbus steel...

Len
OK, just rub our collective noses in it why don't you?
That frame may be white but I am green with envy.........
BTW why don't you build it up with a full Wald gruppo so we don't feel so bad.
MB1
Happy for you
Jealous for me.
Allez Rouge 11-17-2006, 06:12 AM it's 57.5In that case, I'll give you $800 for it, cash money. No, make it $850. Plus shipping.
Deal, or No Deal?
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Excuse me, I gotta go fall on my sword.

toomanybikes 11-17-2006, 06:25 AM Len,
Very nice. Great find.
Fortunately (sadly?) it would not fit me.
Phys's would not fit me either but that does not alter the fact that you both just suck.
New frames and all the attendant excitement and here I sit feeling positively bike deprived.......:(

I'm almost there, give me a couple of days.
I'm bidding on a cheapster on eBay right now. It's white. If I get it my attention will be diverted.

elviento 11-17-2006, 01:25 PM Even though I have some bias against Serottas, I have to admit that's a beauty (and a screaming deal).

lovely lugwork. do you know who painted it?
but I think it was painted in house at Serotta.
The original Serotta's were painted by Ben's wife.

wayneanneli 11-17-2006, 02:11 PM Wow Len, congratulations. Nothing like winning an auction. What a great feeling. Any idea what you'll build it up with?
Cheers, Wayne

CSI colorado tubeset......all tubes triple butted and swaged.....the Down tube ovalizes as it approaches the BB Lug...it's pretty cool looking.

But Len deserves one, he's a gem. Oh Len I was wondering cause the next door neighbors (CyclArt) were involved back in the day but mostly I think as consultants

anything new on the build front??
LiteSpeeder 11-21-2006, 07:52 AM Just make sure that it fits. Was it a custom build or a stock? If it was a stock then you should be able to get the measurements from serotta. If custom then the owner should have the measurements. With these custom bikes you need to look at all of the measurements including headtube length, chainstay length, BB height and front-center length. You cannot just rely on the TT or ST length.
Also, I do notice some rust on the BB and where the headtube and fork crown meet. It could just be the pics or perhaps my eyes are going bad. But, I would certainly inspect the bike or have it inspected for rust as a precaution. It's a steel frame and steel frames rust regardless of what others say. Ask the owner if they used frame saver diligently. The owner's geographical location could also provide clues to frame rust. It looks like you need to do more homework before you write the check.

Had all the measurements before I bought.
that isn't rust, they are very small paint chips from the BB & from the headset ....easily touched up. There is no rust on the bike...it's been well taken care of by the previous owner.
It actually is in much better shape than I was led to believe before I bid......which is how I would prefer it.
