Posted this in the Colnago forum, but got no responses. Thought I would try it here.

According to the competitive cyclist website there are significant differences between the 2005 and 2006 C50 framesets. According to a store I was in that has a 2005 frame on sale for $3,000, there is no difference in the frames other than cosmetics.

Anyone know who is correct? And, if there are differences, what are they. Finally, I could get the 2006 for $3,500. Are the differences, if any, worth the extra cash?

Thanks for all replies

Of course a shop that has an expensive NOS (new old stock) frame wants to convince you that an older model is just as good. In today's competitive market, there will always be improvments, making the frames lighter and sometimes stronger at the same time. I would tend to believe Competitive Cyclist over your LBS.

FWIW, the prices you're being offered aren't that great when you consider the huge markup on these frames.

You can get a new 2007 model, with you choice of color and size, shipped to your door for about $3400. There may be an import duty imposed, that could be as much as $200, but it's no more than sales tax at a local shop.

nothing dramatic..the tubes and lugs are made from high-modulus fibre, that offers more rigidity and lighter weight. They are able to make the lugs shorter in the process with this new material layup, increasing the weight savings. In a medium size frame, the weight savings is like 100gr versus a 2005 frame. This new generation of carbon is made with a twill weave making the new frame immediately distinguishable from previous models.

thanks for the responses. I was thinking about Maestro or Bellatisport, but thought if I could get the equivalent locally, I would do so. Obviously I cannot, so on to mail-order. By the way, anyone know what the markup is on a C50?

I have gotten two complete bikes from Mike Perry at Maestros and if I was in the market for another colnago.....I wouldn't hesitate to go through him again. He would be happy to answer any and every question you have about the brand and he would do so promptly.

I placed an order for a Dream HP a couple months ago, turns out they weren't being made any more. It took a few phone calls, my cell in California to the UK but Mike was patient and explained the whole deal. 2007 Dream HX with a 2006 paint job? Taiwanese fork that replaced the Force or stay all Italian? I think I'm set now; even with tax & shipping the price is lower than anything I've seen stateside.
